Canadian sales of small cars up 8.3 per cent in May

Richmond Hill, Ontario – The Honda Civic continued to lead Canadian passenger car sales, while the Ford F-Series topped pickup truck sales in May, according to industry analyst Dennis DesRosiers.

“Entry level vehicle sales continue to lead the charge to higher sales in the Canadian market,” DesRosiers said. “For the month of May, entry-level sales were up 8.3 per cent and for the year-to-date they are up 14.7 per cent.”

DesRosiers said that the move in the U.S. to smaller vehicles is creating a shortage in Canada. “So although these sales have never been higher from a market share perspective, they would have been even higher if the OEMs could find the product,” he said.

For May 2008, the top ten best-selling passenger vehicles, in order, were the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Mazda3, Toyota Yaris, Hyundai Accent, Chevrolet Cobalt, Pontiac G5, Nissan Versa, Toyota Matrix and Honda Accord.

Year-to-date to the end of May, the top ten best-selling passenger vehicles, in order, were the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Mazda3, Toyota Yaris, Chevrolet Cobalt, Pontiac G5, Hyundai Accent, Toyota Camry, Nissan Versa and Ford Focus.

For May 2008, the top ten best-selling light trucks, in order, were the Ford F-Series, Dodge Caravan, Dodge Ram, Ford Escape, Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, Toyota RAV4, Ford Ranger, Jeep Patriot and Chevrolet Uplander.
