New Mazda6 production begins

Hiroshima, Japan – The Mazda Motor Corporation has announced a ceremony at its AutoAlliance International Inc. plant in Flat Rock, Michigan to celebrate the first U.S. production of the all-new Mazda6 for the North American market.

In comparison to international models, the North American model features a larger body and greater engine displacement. Two engines will be available, a newly-developed 2.5-litre direct-injection four-cylinder also used in the European and Japanese versions, and a 3.7-litre V6 also used in the Mazda CX-9.

“The North American all-new Mazda6 has a specifical significance for us, because it was developed exclusively to meet the needs of the North American market and is being built right here at AAI,” said Gary Roe, president and CEO of AutoAlliance International. “Our dedication to build quality cars will ensure the Mazda6 succeeds amid a very challenging sales environment.”

Mazda has built vehicles in North America since 1987 at Mazda Motor Manufacturing (USA) Corporation in Flat Rock. The plant became a joint venture between Mazda and the Ford Motor Company in 1992, when the name was changed to AutoAlliance International. The first-generation Mazda6 began production at AAI in 2002.
