Dearborn, Michigan – A one-of-a-kind model developed by Ford Racing, the Mustang AV8R, will be unveiled this weekend at an air show in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. The car was named after the famous P-51 Mustang fighter that played a key role in World War II as a bomber escort; several of the restored planes are slated to attend the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) AirVenture Oshkosh show, which is expected to draw 2,500 show aircraft and 650,000 visitors.

The 2009 Mustang GT features a glass roof that will be optional on Mustangs for the model year, special front and rear fascias, integrated spoiler and Shelby GT500 wheels. Ford Racing added a handling pack, supercharger and tuned exhaust. The AV8R’s interior features “bomber jacket” leather inserts and an autograph area for special guests expected at the event, including Edsel B. Ford II, Jack Roush, Harrison Ford, John Travolta, Morgan Freeman and Jim Lovell.

“We chose anodized silver for the body sides and a high-gloss black for the hood, which flows through the glass roof,” said Douglas Gaffka, chief designer for the Mustang. “It was almost like having a canopy. We also embedded the Air Force star in the glass.”

Collectors will be able to bid on the car; auction proceeds will benefit the EAA’s Gathering of Eagles program, which helps provide scholarships for young people interested in aviation careers.
