Toyota Highlander to offer four-cylinder engine

Torrance, California - Toyota has announced that the 2009 Highlander will offer a new 2.7-litre four-cylinder engine that will help make it one of the best of its segment for fuel economy, low emissions and performance.

The new 2.7-litre engine will generate 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque on regular fuel, and will be rated by the EPA as an Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (ULEVII).

The engine is equipped with a variable intake manifold and dual variable valve timing with intelligence (VVT-i), which controls phasing of both the intake and exhaust camshafts to maximize fuel efficiency and torque. The new engine will be mated to an all-new six-speed electronically-controlled transmission; the company said that the transmission will deliver smooth shifts and a quiet ride that is on par with a V6, and acceleration that is “surprisingly quick for a four-cylinder”. When equipped with a tow package, the new engine will achieve a maximum towing capacity of 3,500 lbs.
