Franklin, Tennessee – Nissan Motor Company has announced it will demonstrate its “All-Around Collision Free” prototype vehicle at the 15th World Congress on Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) in New York next week. The prototype includes two all-new collision avoidance technologies and is the first time the prototype will be displayed in the U.S.

The event will be the world’s first demonstration of Nissan’s Back-Up Collision Prevention (BCP); the prototype also incorporates Side Collision Prevention (SCP), and two current production technologies, Distance Control Assist (DCA) and Lane Departure Prevention (LDP).

The Side Collision prevention uses side-mounted sensors when the vehicle changes lanes to activate a warning if another vehicle is detected in the intended lane, and then brakes individual wheels on the opposite side of the vehicle to move the vehicle toward the centre of the original lane of travel. The new Back-Up Collision Prevention uses rear- and side-mounted sensors to detect objects in the path of a vehicle when it is backing out, such as from a parking space, and sounds an alarm and activates the brakes. Distance Control Assist detects the distance to objects in front of a vehicle and sounds an alarm if the vehicle approaches an object, as well as moving the accelerator pedal or applying the brakes to get the driver’s attention. Lane Departure Prevention detects lane markers and warns if a driver is straying from the lane; if the vehicle continues to move over, the same system as in the Side Collision warning helps to move the vehicle back toward the centre of the lane.
