Los Angeles, California - Ford has unveiled the 2010 Fusion at the Los Angeles Auto Show, including an all-new hybrid version that it said will deliver the best fuel economy of any sedan in America.

“With the new Ford Fusion, we are offering consumers more choice, even better fuel economy, and the leading quality and reliability that they have come to expect,” said Derrick Kuzak, Ford’s group vice-president of Global Product Development. “But that isn’t all. We weren’t satisfied with just matching the competition in the segment, we wanted to give consumers even more by delivering engaging driving dynamics and technologies that make the in-car experience more comfortable and connected.”

The freshened Fusion includes a new front end, domed hood, new headlamps and grille, larger fog lamp area, and aerodynmic enhancements and underbody shields to further boost fuel economy. Interior changes include revised seats, all-new instrument panel, ice blue lighting, and redesigned leather-wrapped steering wheel. Engine choices are a new 2.5-litre four-cylinder and improved 3.0-litre V6, both of which provide better fuel economy and power, and with a six-speed automatic transmission standard or available in all models.

For 2010, the Fusion will also be available in an all-new hybrid, alongside the new Mercury Milan Hybrid for the U.S. market. Similar to the system used on the Ford Escape Hybrid, the powertrain system has been optimized for more efficient and seamless transition between gasoline and electric power. The upgrade also allows the hybrid system to operate up to 75 km/h in pure electric mode, and with a city driving range of more than 1,126 km on a single tank of gas.

The system includes the new 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine running an Atkinson cycle, an electronically-controlled continuously variable transmission, intake variable cam timing, enhanced electronic throttle control, and a new, smaller, lighter nickel-metal hydride battery to produce 20 per cent more power. A new SmartGauge with EcoGuide instrument cluster application helps to coach drivers on how to optimize hybrid performance with two LCD screens that can be configured to show different levels of information, including fuel and battery power levels, and average and instant fuel economy.

Ford also announced that the 2010 Fusion will have numerous available technologies, including the company’s Blind Spot Information System with Cross Traffic Alert, SYNC, voice-activated navigation, SIRIUS Travel Link, reverse camera system, EasyFuel capless fuel filler system, and Sony-branded audio system.
