2009 Infiniti G37
Ottawa, Ontario – You’ll rarely see me mention paint colour in a car review, mostly because colour preferences are so subjective. But I have to mention it right off the top here, because only a colour like my recent G37x tester’s Sandstone Metallic finish could make such a stylish car look so dull.
Okay, got that off my chest. Now where was I?
The G37 is the latest iteration of Infiniti’s entry-level G sedan and coupe (and, for 2010, convertible) lineup. What started out in the late 1990s as a relatively modest, four-cylinder powered compact called the G20 has evolved into a sport sedan that can rightly lay claim to being capable of keeping up with Europe’s best in this class.

The G37 moniker is new for the sedan for 2009, having first appeared on the coupe version of the G in 2008. The name change is owed to an upgrade to a 3.7-litre version of Nissan/Infiniti’s much-lauded VQ-series of V6 engines.
The 3.7’s 325 horsepower rating is a healthy boost from the old engine’s 306, which was already more than you get in many of the G’s competitors (particularly those hailing from Germany).
It’s a stylish car, and looks more expensive than it is (or at least it would, in a more flattering colour). But in this class, where key competitors are benchmarks like the BMW 3 Series and Audi A4, what’s important is how the G37 drives.

Dude if you are testing/reviewing an AWD sedan at least touch on it’s AWD system’s capabilities. I read the whole article thinking something on the AWD performance should be coming up, but guess what.

@sam: Good point. Check the top of Page 3.

Hey Cheasyrider, I see you’re making negative comments here. I guess you left Autospies because everyone was still laughing at you, not with you. Same thing here.

easyrider profile: Typical 14 yr old blogger, male, never been in – much less driven – the cars he attempts to discuss, playing Fast & Furious on PS3 right now…
I own an 2008 G35xS and can vouch that it is a better all around rig than the 3-Series. I traded a 2006 A4 for the G and have spent hours of track time in 330i’s and 335i’s at the BMW facility in SC. Great handling car but turbo lag galore in the 335i and zero back seat room. With the 3, you do get the German electrical gremlins at no charge…
The G is a great highway cruiser and the 306hp/328hp of naturally aspirated power can make up for any shortfalls. Far superior interior to the 3 also (BMW is no benchmark for interior fit and finish either – go to car show and REALLY look at materials on a BMW vs Audi, VW, Infiniti, Lexus, etc…They are lacking.

klossfam, easyrider may be a 14 y/o blogger, but you don’t sound all that more knowledgeable.
the g37 is a great car, but it doesn’t sound like you’ve actually driven a bmw either.
the 335i does not have any turbo lag. and for arguments sake, even if it did, it’s still faster than the g37.
even a 230hp/200ft-lb 328 is only a second slower. so that extra 95hp in the nissan isn’t doing a whole lot of good.
no back seat room? i’m 6′1″ and can sit behind myself no problem. are you some sort of 7′ giant?
check the rear passenger measurements between the g37 and the 3 series and there is almost no difference.
and as for fit and finish, audi clearly has the best interiors. everyone else plays catch-up with them, including the g.

I’ll settle this – Buy a Hyundai Genesis w/4.6L V8 and Technology Package for $49k (probably less) and be done with it.
AWD? They’re called SNOW tires! Should be law – like it is Quebec!

bobby – Pretty funny you questioning my knowledge…do you own a 335i? Regardless, I doubt you’ve hammered a 335i around BMWs track in Spartanburg or drifted one on their skidpad? I work for a SC company and we use the test track for events all the time – I’ve also flogged M3s, M5s and M6s as well as a lot of Z4M time…When you need power out a tight autocross corner, you are BEGGING those twin turbos to spool up – it floors me that it rarely comes up in reviews (gotta sell that advertising I guess). Even the pro drivers at the BMW facility will give you – “yeah, all turbos have some lag”.
You can also ignore measurements for rear leg room off ANY makers spec sheet. Seat travel determines a lot of it, and simply put, a G has much more useable room than a 3 (it SHOULD too – it’s 187 inches vs 178 inches – and the wheelbase on the G is longer)…I’m 6′1″ and a 6′2″ person can sit behind me in the G in comfort. You simply do not have the same room in a 3 (or as I well know, the last gen B7 Audi A4 platform).
I’ll stop typing now…

Sorry – one more thing for Spec5…I totally agree…The Genny in both the 3.8 and 4.6 (I’ve only driven the 3.8, however) is a great car…Although rumor is from Hyundai that a AWD version of the Genny will be here for the 2011 model year…there is demand in our Northern climate regardless of the great snow tires they make now…

I have friend who chose an Acura TL over the G because of trunk space for his golf clubs (2006). Would you say the trunk is THAT small? If so ,this spells bad news for the demographic they’re aiming at

I believe having RWD with a good set of snow tires is much better than having AWD with average all-season tires. I also heard that RWD is in fact less likely to lose traction on icy roads. Someone please explain.
at 8:47 pm
Genesis indeed. Huge bang for the buck, no doubt. Its only weakness, the brand image is not as prestigious infiniti or bmw, but I heard the Genesis is becoming its own brand (along with gen coupe, equus, veracruz) in a few years from now.

I think that G37 came out uglier than anticipated, especially its rear end. Its front lacks the clean and sharp look of G35. Overall disappointed a little.

Consumer Reports manufacturer comparison (average of best vs. worst vehicle)
Infinity – 6
Hyundai – 8
BMW – 20
Audi – 22
Mercedes – 27
Cadillac – 31
Personally I love the styling of the new G37 – if anything I think the BMW’s look the most bland (actually maybe the Genesis) but thats because BMW updates its “Bangle Styling” every 30 years it seems. (ok maybe more like 10-15) The new A4s and Lexus are nicest IMO.
As for AWD. I’m pretty far north and I’d MUCH rather good snow tires vs. AWD any day. AWD will help you accelerate and MAYBE to a limited degree steer – but good snow tires will help you accelerate, steer and most importantly brake. GOOD snow tires (not motomaster or Toyo or some other crap) will trump AWD any time IMO.

sounds like a lot of PISSING contestants on This Thread!?
