By Paul Williams

The automotive sector is currently experiencing challenges that will see certain companies and brands either sold, or cease to exist. Times are tough; vehicle sales are significantly down in Canada, the U.S. and throughout the world. Although Canada doesn’t have what you could call a “Canadian car,” many models are built here, and all are specifically equipped for our market. For some consumers, the fact that a vehicle is built in Canada is a factor they consider when making a purchase decision. However, some recent changes (big changes) have taken place concerning Canadian production. Suzuki XL-7s were built here, but production has been suspended for a while. Honda’s Ridgeline was built in Alliston, Ontario, until early in 2009, but they’re now built in Alabama. And you may find some 2009 model GM trucks (Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra), but their home plant in Oshawa closed in May, 2009. Here, then is the list of vehicles “Made in Canada,” up to the 2009 model year.

i don’t believe they make GM pick ups in Oshawa anymore.
i also think that Suzuki has suspended the XL-7, and Pontiac is no more (Torrent)

Thanks for this.
The Volkwagen Routan made by Chrysler was a shocker… maybe it shouldn’t have been, a shocker that is.. what with unreliability as a liability in both camps.

Russell Purcell says:

The Ridgeline is nolonger produced in Canada either.

Gerry Pierce says:

Paul,

I enjoyed reading your list about vehicles assembled in Canada. Certain plants score higher in quality than others and this can be valuable information when making decisions. Is the 2010 Buick Allure continuing to be assembled in Oshawa or has all production been shifted to Kansas?

Cheers,
Gerry Pierce.

The Acura ZDX will soon be added in Alliston’s Honda Manufacturing.
As I understand it the rear fender accentuated curves plus the use of leather extension to parts of dash are new manufacturing firsts and it gets six speed auto transmission–also a first for Honda.

??Only ‘pilot’ 2010 Camaro models were assembled in Oshawa, up to the 2009 model year! Assembly ‘location’ barely matters, as assembly ‘time is generally only 30 – 40 hours (or less).

I work in plastic and we do intake manifold parts for Mustang, Explorer, F150, Fusion, Tundra, Tacoma, Corvette, GM Ecotec and more. Maybe is just one part, but IT the one you see when you open your hood!!!
