Brazil increases biofuel requirement

Brasilia, Brazil – Brazil has increased its biofuel standard, requiring a 4 per cent biodiesel blend (B4) in fuel. The requirement was initially 2 per cent in 2008, which was then then increased to 3 per cent.

Brazil has 43 plants producing and selling biodiesel, with a total production capacity of nearly 3.6 billion litres per year. Family farmers contribute about 15 per cent of raw materials.

The country is expanding family farmer participation in the production of different oilseeds, and expects that it will expand next to 5 per cent biodiesel, or B5.
