September sales down, but looking better: DesRosiers

Richmond Hill, Ontario – Passenger car and light truck sales were down 3.5 per cent in September when compared with the same month in 2008, but were much better than year-to-date sales which are now down 14.3 per cent, according to industry analyst Dennis DesRosiers.

“GM reemerged as the best-selling brand in September, although their sales were down by 23.4 per cent,” DesRosiers said. “Ford was the big Detroit winner with sales up 24.4 per cent. Ford has a strong product cadence and this is certainly helping them move a lot of product.”

DesRosiers noted that BMW had one of its best months on record, while Mercedes-Benz had its best to date, with 2,248 vehicles sold. Other smaller manufacturers had large gains in September, including Subaru up 68.4 per cent, and Mitsubishi up 18.5 per cent.
