Yonkers, New York – The redesigned Toyota Prius is still the most fuel-efficient car consumers can buy, according to Consumer Reports, which has named it the Top Pick for Green Car in its Annual Auto Issue for the past six years.
The redesigned model also received a “very good” road test score of 80 in the magazine’s November issue.
“The redesigned Prius has several small improvements,” said David Champion, senior director of Consumer Reports’ Auto Test Center. “It feels more substantial to drive, and still gets great fuel economy.”
Instead of testing a group of competing vehicles for the issue, Consumer Reports featured tests of several new and redesigned vehicles it has recently tested, including the redesigned Chevrolet Equinox and Subaru Outback, the new Nissan Cube, and the Volkswagen Routan minivan.
The Chevrolet Equinox received a “very good” road test score of 69 and is “much improved over the previous version.” The magazine said it is now competitive in its category, but is not on par with the Toyota RAV4 and Subaru Forester that lead the category. The Subaru Outback received a “very good” road test score of 79, while the Cube received a “good” score of 64. The magazine found that it is not up to par with the similar Scion xB and Kia Soul boxy wagons. The Routan, essentially a rebadged Chrysler minivan with some modifications, received a “good” test score of 65.
The magazine predicts “average” reliability for the Prius and Outback. Both the Equinox and Cube are too new to have reliability data for Consumer Reports to recommend them. Although the Routan is also too new for reliability data, the Chrysler Town & Country on which it is based had below-average reliability and the magazine expects the Routan to be the same. Consumer Reports only recommends vehicles that have performed well in its tests, have at least average predicted reliability, and performed at least adequately if crash-tested or included in a government rollover test.
