2010 Dodge Ram HD
Chelsea, Michigan – Chrysler recently announced that “Ram” is to become its own brand. This changes the truck landscape, because Ram trucks will cease to be Dodges, and Chrysler says it will expand this new brand to include commercial vans (rebadged Fiats, no doubt) and perhaps even get back into heavy truck production. This is in addition to their recent expansion into the medium-duty sector, with larger trucks like 4500 and 5500-series models, which up-fitters use to build anything from tow truck bodies to ambulances.
But for the moment, the newest Ram is still a Dodge. The next-generation 2010 Dodge Ram Heavy Duty pickup trucks were first seen at last year’s Toronto Auto Show and driven just last week at the Chelsea, Michigan proving grounds.

At the media introduction, it was obvious that Ram trucks were getting a push in the new Chrysler/Fiat brand structure. The first clue was the addition of a crew cab option, something the Ram HD pickup has never had. This is an obvious invitation to RV and boat haulers as the recreational hauling market buys crew cabs nearly 70 per cent of the time. Frankly, it was just a matter of time before Dodge woke up to the obvious. But in addition to the Crew (Dodge simply calls it a “Crew”) they are now the only ones to offer the unique Mega Cab as well. These cab offerings can be matched to either a 6-foot, 4-inch or 8-foot cargo box. As for trim, there are four distinct levels: ST, SLT, SXT and Laramie – a nice spread.
As of September 2009, sales in the automotive industry as a whole are still down as much as 15 per cent. By comparison, truck sales (as a whole) are down only four per cent, year over year. This speaks to the reality that truck buyers need trucks and Dodge needs steady revenue. So, it seems they have picked the right place to start.

So, what about towing capability? This year Dodge has joined GM and Ford in offering an integrated trailer brake controller, one with a nifty feature: the gain settings and actual braking action appear in the centre screen (between the speed and r.p.m. gauges) as numbers and a bar graph. That saves looking down by your knee (where the controller is) and because it comes on each time you brake, monitoring the efficiency of the system is the same as keeping an eye on your speed.
What does all this add up to in terms of capability? Well, the 2010 HD Ram can tow up to 8,391 kg (18,500 lb) and carry 2,318 kg (5,110 lb) of payload. On all 3500 models with dual rear wheels, GCWR is increased to 11,521 kg (25,400 lb) with the 6.7-litre turbo diesel. Coupled to the automatic transmission and a 4.10 axle ratio, an additional 635 kg (1400 lb) can be added.
For those who also plough snow with their trucks, note that a higher front Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR) of 2,495 kg (5,500 lb) has been added to all 4×4 models.

Who thought getting rid of the Dodge name on the trucks was a good idea ?
I wonder what the real plan is…Too bad I became hooked on Dodge trucks…I dont know if I feel comfortable buying a Ram without the Dodge name..
Did they actually do any research on this ? Most Dodge guys are really upset/confused by this…Will the Ram sales drop off,I know I am not buying a new one now !!!
at 8:31 am
Note to Fiat/Chrysler…you better keep the Ram a DODGE or you may see your sales go down to nothing…

@ Dodge
Fully agree. So what’s the new truck going to be named? The RAM RAM? How about the RAM RAM Truck? Yea…
at 11:51 am
Good point. Forget useability, reliability, capability, or even esthetics, real truck buyers are most concerned about the NAME of the truck.
Carry on, children…

@ Bg T
Don’t underestimate the power of an established brand name. We’re not the only ones that think this is a bad idea…

I agree with Big T.
If the name is the deciding factor of your purchase, thats quite sad. Especially given the engineering that goes into the finished product.
I personally don’t care what you call it…. as long as it works!

Its not going to to be called Ram Ram, Ram 1500 or 2500, 3500, but it certainly won’t affect weather or not I buy one, thats just rediculous.

Big T (others)- I own several Dodge products 4 of them were Dodge 1500’s and a Charger R/T,I bought new..For reliability, useability, capability and oh yeah esthetics.. Yes its Dodge trucks !!! I drive 60,000 a year and never had any major problems…highest km was 410,000 before some clown on a cell phone t-boned me !!
My reason I am against the Dodge Ram name change is that it was proven with Chrysler’s past name changes, people will go to another manufacturer..The Plymouth Voyager was a Dodge Caravan but when the stopped Plymouth the people who bought multiple Voyager’s left Chrysler alltogether !!! Remember when Chrysler called the Neon a Chrysler instead of a Dodge..sales dropped off..then it came back as a Dodge SX 2.0 !!!!!I am a Mopar guy,I will buy a Ram 1500 next year but Chrysler cannot have people leaving them as it appears lots will do..from reading other blogs and even what other journelists write, all are confused !!!
at 2:13 pm
so you people who are not concerned about the name of the truck would buy it even if it was called the Ram Cloud? Ram Runner? Ram Rod?
Of course name recognition is important, that’s marketing 101
at 7:45 pm
Fiat Ram, has an, um, interesting ring to it.
“FIAT RAM POWER WAGON”, lol.
at 8:11 pm
Not too concerned if the truck loses the Dodge name. But sure better not lose the Ram horns, I would be devastated!!
at 1:09 am
My understanding is that Chrysler is NOT changing the name to “RAM” but merely setting up separate internal brand development and management for Dodge RAM (trucks) and Dodge cars.
All trucks will have RAM in the name, but the Dodge name will also continue. Many people have misread the Chrysler press-release and assumed the Dodge name will be gone from trucks. I do not believe this is true.

YEEEE-F***IN-HAWWWWW, an even bigger pickup truck!!!!!! I bet they could use a whole mess of these in Alberta!!!!!
Remember, only 3 things come from Alberta; steers, queers and pickup trucks…and I don’t see no horns on you boy!
YEEEEEEEEHAAAAAAAW
