New construction planned for N.B.’s Route 1

Saint John, New Brunswick – New construction work is planned for the Route 1 One Mile House Interchange Project in Saint John, New Brunswick that will continue through the winter.

A contract valued at $2.57 million has been awarded to Debly Enterprises of Saint John for grading and paving the highway adjacent to westbound lanes of Route 1.

“This government is pleased to advance an important project that is geared to improving traffic access for commercial and industrial vehicles, and make the downtown commercial district of Saint John safer and more efficient,” said Transportation Minister Denis Landry. “This construction activity during the winter also continues to put people to work and stimulate our economy.”

Work this winter will also include driving piles, construction of the north abutment adjacent to the highway, and construction of a pier adjacent to Rothesay Avenue. The One Mile House Interchange, estimated at $65 million, includes a 600-metre structure and associated ramps and roadways connecting Route 1 to Bayside Drive, crossing the CN rail yard, Marsh Creek and Rothesay Avenue. The interchange is scheduled to be completed in 2012 and will improve access and traffic flow in Saint John’s industrial area, while reducing congestion from the downtown commercial district.
