- All-new sedan model
- Hatchback and wagon discontinued

For 2009, the Mazda6 is completely redesigned into its second generation.

While the Mazda6 is sold in many global markets, the North American version offers a larger interior and exterior size, more powerful engines and unique styling. The 2009 model is available only as a four-door, front-wheel drive sedan, and includes larger dimensions and sportier handling than the model it replaces. The hatchback and wagon bodystyles are no longer available.

Available in GS and GT trim, the Mazda6 uses a new 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine with six-speed manual or optional five speed transmission, or a 3.7-litre V6 with six-speed automatic borrowed from the CX-9. Both engines are available in the two trim lines.

Features on the GS models include 17-inch alloy wheels, air conditioning, heated mirrors, variable intermittent wipers, CD/MP3 stereo with auxiliary input, trip computer, wheel-mounted audio controls, power windows, power locks with keyless entry, cruise control, 60/40 split-folding rear seat, tire pressure monitoring system, floor mats, tilt and telescopic wheel, and anti-theft alarm system.

The GS V6 adds fog lights.

The GT models add 18-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone automatic climate control, rain-sensing wipers, automatic headlamps, fog lights, six-CD/MP3 stereo with audio input, power sunroof, auto-dimming rearview mirror, garage door opener, centre console with slide armrest and storage box, heated leather-trimmed seats with eight-way driver and four-way passenger power adjustment, and black electroluminescent gauges.

The GT V6 model adds Xenon headlamps and driver's side memory seats.

Available options on the GS include a Comfort Package of dynamic stability control, eight-way power driver's seat with lumbar support, power sunroof, leather-wrapped steering wheel, rain-sensing wipers and automatic headlamps. The GT Luxury Package includes "smart" keyless entry system with pushbutton ignition, ten-speaker Bose stereo system, Bluetooth with Audio Profile, Sirius satellite radio compatibility and Xenon headlamps; on GT V6 vehicles, the package also includes a blind spot monitoring system and puddle lamps.
