So you want an Golf III, two things the 1.8ltr engine is much better than the 2.0ltr. Mine was '93 I just crashed it band bought a 2000 tdi last week.  
1) parts are easy to find and pretty cheap.
2) very important follow mantence sch.  even if yoo think everything is ok. do as the book says, delays cost a lot of $.
3) insuance $1500/yr Gold are rather 39/100 for theift so you pay for the theift risk.
4) My TDI $1920 2d or $1984 4D TD Insurance.
5) repairs pretty low tech for the oil change filters, brakes, muffler but don't touch the plugs get that done at a specialist.  
6)I'll tell you next year I just got my TDI.
7) I'm 6 2' it no problem.

Hi everyone,  

We would like to by a new 05/06 Jetta TDI Wagon and we are not sure if it will be still available at the dealer at that time (since I have heard that this model is already discontinued at the factory in Germany). If somebody can help us with some thoughts in regard with its availability at that time it will be much appreciated.

Master I think the VW will serve you well as long as you can get all of the service records for the car. The TDI is a very good car as I have a friend who has 5 of them including 1 new one. He keeps 2 of them for parts to keep his fleet running and they have served him very well. Snak is correct in that they will give you good service and you should fit in fairly well in comfort. Definitely go for a standard transmission as the auto's were a little on the doggie side.

Hy Everyone,

I just bought a 96 Jetta gas. I have a few questions that I was wondering if some one could help me with?

1) I'm having problems with the speedometer and rpm gauges not working. About half the time I start it they don't work. The rpm gauge will sit on zero and viborate while the speedometer will do nothing. When they work they both work fine till I shut it off.

2) I was wondering what problems are come for this car?  

3)It has 180,000km is there anything maintence I should do?

Sorry Dan but this has got to be said... "Gotta love how people buy things and THEN start asking the Qs".

I don't have much experience with pre '98 VWs, so can't really help you out there. Timing belts are always the big service issue and yours is about in need of a 2nd one - find out if that's been done. As for mileage, you'll know soon enough :-)

Sorry Dan I missed the part that said you bought a gas VW. Assuming it's a 2.slow you should be averaging in the high 20's low 30's with a manual. 50-64MPG is the average for the TDI manual

I have a 93 VW Golf CL that keeps beeping and tellingme that it's overheating when it does not seem to be.  Gauges are all normal and fluid levels are all good.  I've taken it into the dealership twice and one different VW mechanic and still have the problem.  They keep telling me nothing is wrong.  I replaced the thermostat in January and that didn't help either.  Any ideas would be greatly appreciated as the noise is a bit stressful although I've never actually had a problem.

My advice: Remove the device that causes the beeping and keep driving :-)

And I'm half-serious. Would prob cost way more to figure out how to turn the silly indicators off than to just disable them if you know nothing's wrong. And if you don't drive far and maintain your car, the odds of it actually overheating are small I'd think.

I would unhook the offending device and have a small 2.5" sized gauge installed under the dash to show your heat temps. Auto Gauge make a nice unit and are easy to read even at night. You will know exactly what the readings are then and have no worries about it any further.

Too bad that VW has evolved into what it is today.
I bought a new 1971 VW bug that I drove the hell out of and the only problems I had with it was the usual rust and heaterbox problems. In those days all you needed was a 3/8 inch wrench and a screw driver to fix anything.

Now, you need diagnostics and a mechanic to tell you what's wrong.

Has anyone seen any for sale in ontario? I hear they are pretty efficient and trouble free? Any bad news?
