You may discuss our cover story of the day in this thread....
Used Car Review:
1995-1999 Subaru Legacy and Outback

1997 Subaru Legacy OutbackThe second-generation Legacy, like the rest of Subaru’s late-1990s line-up, gained a reputation for reliability, says Chris Chase.
“Price-wise, a used Legacy or Outback should come in a little cheaper than a comparable Accord or Camry despite the added value of the Subaru’s all-wheel-drive system,” he notes.     More...

Yes, a few regulars here have good experiences with used Subarus as second cars.

I've never had an experience with a Subaru as a second car, but my Forester made a great FIRST and only car.  Grin

The Terdcel is gone. Will sell or trade in on Wiffy’s new car in March. Rut Ro will have his first full time winter.

Our 1999 OBW was a great car.  Probably would have kept it except the 2000- cars are much nicer, especially the interiors.  I did also prefer having the Phase 2 SOHC 2.5L which has far fewer head gasket problems and when it does, they're not the internal leaks of the Phase 1.

The best "cheap" one would be a 2.2L equipped Legacy as the little engine is super-duper tough and the 95's are CHEAP.

Mom's Outback is identical to the one in the pic down to the colour.  The first year manuals had the 2.2L 137HP engine that while a little weaker, never had any of the mechanical question marks attached to it.  It was also the last year of the hillholder tranny until fairly recently.

Mom is very happy with the car, still drives it today and plans to keep driving it until it dies.
