Special Travel Feature:
A Canadian Driver in Maui

MauiDriving in Maui is a surprisingly rewarding experience, reports Editor, Greg Wilson.  In this special travel feature, Wilson discovers the Hawaiian island's unique blend of challenging roads and spectacular scenery.  "Many of the roads snake endlessly in and around the valleys turning a short drive into a true driving adventure," he says.        More...

 Thumbs up I Agree

That's one of the islands my wife & I visited during our honeymoon last June.  We had rented a Jeep Wrangler which actually came in handy for the 2 side trails/roads we went into.

The best drive in Maui bar none is the run up to the Crater and back. The best time to do this is around midnight, after the star gazers have gone home and before the sunrise tours begin. My and I were running basic rental specials, a Cavalier and a Saturn. We overheated them on the run up thge mountain and the brakes were glowing on the way down. Some of the best hairpin driving there is. I think I took at least 50% of the tire treads in less than two trips. Grin

How can you spot a Canadian in Maui?

Look for the guy in shorts with white socks.

A great change in the type of article shown on the front page.

My parents went to Hawaii a few years ago and loved it. All I got outta the deal was the house to myself and yep, you guessed it, a t-shirt.

The changes in climate on such a small island are amazing. I'd love to go sometime, and plan on it.

From what my parents said, most people there had no idea what a doughnut was. Anyone have the funds to start a Timmie's?

Great article, it is a fabulous driver's island.  We went a couple of years ago and rented a Miata from Hertz (auto unfortunately).  We stayed at a house on a flower farm on the north hump of the island about 3 miles into the road to Hana.  Amazing place with superb driving.

On small town that shouldn't be missed is Paia - maybe 10 minutes east of the airport on the way to the road to Hana.  A couple great fish restaurants and a super crepe place up on the main side street.

Also, don't miss the black sand beaches about 10-15 minutes before you get into Hana.

Great place, and as the author says, absolutely rent a convertible!

I would agree 100% with those that say the 2 must-drives on Maui are the Hana Hiway (and don't be chicken, go all the way around the island even tho the rental car cos don't want you to do that); and secondly, the drive to the Crater. Both are stunningly beautiful and they are very different one from the other. Good times.  Grin Grin

Actually, they have a local specialty called a malasadas:  kinda like a doughnut minus the hole.

And yes, IMO, Leonard's is the best over there.... Tried 10 places in as many days...

Hey Panzer any PICS on those ahem...."SIDE_TRIPS!!!!"......

You wish...  Grin

Why would I fork out $$$ and then go to a Tim Hortons? Why have Tim's weak P*ss when you can have local Kona? Kind of like American's going to europe and then sitting down at the Pizza Hut or Planet Hollywood. Roll Eyes
