Day-by-Day Review: 2008 Suzuki Grand Vitara JLX
James does some rooting around the Grand Vitara's interior and finds that this is a useful little truck, with good cargo space and easy-to-use controls. He advises taking care around the swing-out rear door when it's open, though.

You may discuss our cover story of the day in this thread....
Feature:
The Truck King Challenge

Truck King Challenge - Ford F-seriesIn what is probably the biggest pickup truck comparison test in Canadian history,  a group of six auto writers representing major Canadian English and French publications tested 19 different pickups back to back in a series of tests that included towing, hauling, highway driving, off-road ability, and utility.  One truck was crowned 2007 Canadian Truck King: the 2007 Toyota Tacoma 4X4 Double Cab.

Excellent work done by the CD staff.

I'm suprised that the Nissan Frontier managed the best fuel economy and disapointed with the Colorado and its 5 cylinders that burns fuel like a V8.  On paper, Toyota and Honda have better fuel economy than the Nissan but reality is opposite.

Toyota Tacoma 4X4 Double Cab is the uglies truck out there Roll Eyes

I wonder what these guys would pick if they had to also buy the truck with their own money.

All of Toyota interiors are pretty ugly.

I put my money into my choice.

Well, you know what they say... "opinions are like arseholes... everybody's got 'em"  You may not find it attractive, but I do!  Love those Toyota pick-em-up trucks.

I think the Tacomas look fantastic. But, after being so used to a Ram Quad had to laugh at how dinky everything is when I was scoping one out a few months ago.

Otherwise, sign me up for a bright blue one.

There are not many people who would disagree that Toyota makes great trucks.  But they are very, very expensive compared to Dodge/GMC/Ford.  If our Dakota Laramie carried a Toyota badge, it would likely have cost $20 000 more than it did.

Still worth it?

The building at my work is being expanded.  The company doing the electrical work has about 5-10 trucks here everyday.  Most are GMC trucks and vans.  But their supervisor trucks are Tacoma’s 4x4 extended cabs.  Also all their trucks have custom plates with the company name on it.

I was walking the Chev lot on the weekend and there was lots of $40,000 trucks and over. So I priced out the work Tundra I bought (double cab 2WD), came to $41,000. Priced out a GM with comparable equipment and it was $39,000.

Toyota doesn't really have sales and they don't have a lot of plain models, but optioned similarly at list there isn't that much difference in the full sizes, at least.

What they list at is irrelevant. That GM truck can probably be bought for $5000 under MSRP with little effort. Comparing selling prices of $41000 vs $34000 brings a considerable difference.

Nice to see the comparison testing Bow where is the scorecard?

I looked vary hard at the Toyota Tundra when I evaluated trucks. I could not justify the cult pricing for what I needed and saved a considerable amount with the Z-71 GMC Sierra I chose.

Please tell me this article is only half-written and we will actually see justification for why the Toyota was crowned "King".

One main missing contender in the Full-Size 1/2-ton V8 under 5-litres category is the F150 with the 4.6L so not much credibility in the results for this particular class IMO.

This article which I find really not representative of what we usually see from CD puzzles me. A lot of effort seems to have been spent of this review yet the main article is limited to comments on one truck?  Shuffle

It is also clearly diverging from Canadian drivers' preferences since full size trucks far outsell mid-size ones. It's more representative IMO of which trucks car auto enthusiasts would pick should they have to...

While I do think this is a great article, here's a few thing to consider:

- can we see some more infirmation on the actual scoring

- I am not a GM loyalist, per se, but why not wait a couple of weeks and include the new style 07's??

Just my $.02's

The testing for the Truck King comparison was actually done a few months ago. The guy who organized it isn't a CD.com contributor; perhaps it would've been good to wait for the new GM trucks to be out before doing the comparo. I think there's some thought being given to doing another similar comparo next year. Big maybe, though...
