Day-by-Day Review: 2009 Audi A3 2.0T quattro S-Line
After weeks without driving anything "sporting," James hops into the driver's seat of the lightly redesigned 2009 Audi A3. Fun indeed, and with quattro all-wheel drive and a set of winter tires, the perfect vehicle for winter time.

Picture Gallery:  2007 Subaru Legacy GT Wagon

Day 1:

2007 Subaru Legacy GT Wagon

Starting at $27,995, the Subaru Legacy line is one of the very few wagons available in Canada with full time all-wheel drive.  My test model is the GT version of the Legacy Wagon, putting out 243hp and 241lb/ft of torque.  With that much power under your right foot you can sleep in and still get the kids to school and get to work in plenty of time. In the States, they killed the manual-transmission for this car in 2006, but kept a manual in the Outback XT.  I've never understood that.  I'm jealous that you folks still get the manual Legacy GT wagon.

That said, the Legacy GT wagon is awesome.  I love the GT's engine, and I've been very happy with my base-engined Legacy wagon, with everything from (1) sporty jaunts on country roads to (2) safely transporting a 3-month-old baby home on a stormy night to (3) hauling as much cargo as most people can fit in a mid-size crossover SUV.  All this combined with a reasonable price tag and an excellent reliability history?  Awesome.

Lets hope we get some snow in Ottawa. This is a great family car, and looks great. Is the "wood" in the interior really that reddish? Have fun ( I know you will).

As an XC owner, I can affirm that the Sube has has a superior drivetrain layout (longitudinal), is cheaper on parts (Volvo driveshaft $1200, 90o drive and x-case ~$4K- which appear to pack it in at 200k) and gets better mileage than the XC. The Sube is simply a better designed car.

Frankly, if Volvo doesn't sharpen up, I can't see the public buying into the value equation for much longer.

A car that was on my list until I checked my bank acct  Cry

With it costing 50% more than my Mz6-Wgn I don't see the value there.  A few more ponies and awd don't add up to 15G in my books. Sure it will handle better at 9/10ths for that 3 times a year I get to drive at that limit.  It is still a great car but I feel it is overpriced by 5G. The good news for Subaru is there are few true wagons with AWD out there so it works for them.

Even though Subies are very reliable at 45G I would want more than a 3/60 warranty.

I'm disappointed that Subaru is no longer offering a more basic Legacy GT wagon.  What if I don't want fancy fake wood, sunroof, digitial nose-pickers and leather seats?  Shave $6k off the price and keep all that stuff.  When the MX-5 goes in a few more years, I'll likely be getting close to baby-time and the Legacy GT wagon represents a heck of a cool machine (esp. thanks to Cobb tuning Wink ) with a stick-shift and all that power and AWD.  As it is now, I guess I'll simply have to hope that I can still get a WRX wagon in a few years... or better yet, Mazda brings a wagon version of its Mazdaspeed6.  Huh

The Subaru would have been in my driveway last January but I couldn't get swambo past the slightly cramped back seating. I love Subies - especially the wagons, either Outback or Legacy. Their advertising road is great.

I think you would have a better chance getting a MS CX-7 before MS6-Wgn. Besides, the talk is no hatch/wagon after 2008

I wonder what price the WRX will be in three years.  It starts at $35,495 now and isn’t there a redesign coming?  Will it be getting a little too close to $40G in three years?

Why did Subaru drop that entry level GT wagon? They use to have one.

A friend has a LGT (sedan).  IMO, it's maybe a 35K car, but 40K+....

They are also running a 'Sticks to the road' spot on the weather network lately. Picture a Legacy wagon sitting in a parking lot. Heaving winds are blowing debris all around the car. The vehicle remains 'glued' to the road without moving. It doesn't even shake. Then they fade to a CGI of the assymetrical AWD platform.

It's quite well done.

Oh decisions decisions... I LOVE this car (sedan version). But the MSP6 is one hell of a car as well. Its gonna be tough.

I agree with most though. A stipper GT version (no leather [hot in summer, cold in winter], no freakin' wood, no bloody sunroof, etc.) at around $33 would be ideal.

Just checking their website... Didn't they make a sedan GT that started at 36-38?

There are 3 models with the 2.5 i engine. 27 K 30K and 36 K

Only ONE 1 choice with the 2.5 Turbo at 40K?

Its a SUBARU not an Audi A4 Avant (at 42k)

This is nearly as overpriced in the same way as a Passat Wagon 3.6L (with and without 4MOTION), only smaller inside. On the wagon front they can get away with it more as there's less competition, but for sedans the $35-45G market is hot with luxury brands of similar size, more with AWD than before.

I think there should be a stripper available with optional roof too. Would like to see the sales break-down last year (if anyone has it).

Subaru repackaged and lowered the price on some of their lower end value models. Wish they had done the same on the upper end.

Overall it is a nice vehicle though, but because of the rear quarters probably more for a couple with lots of gear or small kids than for a family.

I think you need more room with little kids as they are in cars and get to kick the back seat of the driver.
For kids you need a large van to be happy

I experience the same thing. My 2.5 year old didn't like the centre seating position in the 2007 Camry as his feet brushed with the rear of the centre console, he kept kicking it. I moved his seat behind the passenger seat, he likes it a bit more, but can still kick the rear seat. In the 2002 Corolla, he kicked a lot behind the seats. There's a LOT more room in the new Camry compared to the Corolla though. Legacy has close to same room as the Corolla for rear seats.

Isn't this, in a way, supposed to NOT look like it is 2XX hp and 44 Gs? I always thought the GT and the Spec B were sleepers, posing as the 27 000 Legacy? Also, if we are going to compare the Legacy wagon to the Mazda 6 wagon, which I like as well, shouldn't we compare the base 27 k one? not this 40 K one?
