Welcome back from the holidays. I hope all my readers had a good holiday; I certainly did, but it's time to get back to work, which means another vehicle to testdrive.  I've been looking forward to testing this week's vehicle, the Subaru Legacy 2.5GT Spec B. I like this ride and it does seem to offer a lot, except value. I don't imagine Subaru selling very many of these at that price, since for less money you could get a BMW 328xi, Infini G35 AWD and for a lot less you could get a Mazdaspeed 6. I still like the car just not 45.5 K like. It is a shame they don't offer the 6 speed in the regular GT model.
In a few years this model might be a good used car if you could get it for about 15k less.
I guess I'm just cheap that way.

This car at $40k is reaching the upper limit.  $46k before taxes is mucho dinero.

Does seem like a lot of fundage, especially in comparison to the MazdaSpeed6, but I would enjoy driving one. Gotta be a nice, quick, safe, comfy vehicle to have en route to Detroit.

Sweet car to take into Detroit. What car does grant get?  Wink

I agree when compared to the mazdaspeed6, it seems expensive, but price aside, I like this car a lot. Can't wait to hear your impressions.

 ROFL I love your job.

That's real neat that you get to drive it to Detroit.

I really liked the drive of Subaru Legacy GT. We may eventually get a GT wagon one day... (but that's far off). And because of the Shocked price, we would get it in the States!

Still, it would be the "long road trip car" for us, and comfort is important to us. We would be afraid of missing the "Camry-comfort" on such trips. So, quite interested in seeing how you like the long drive in this one.

My test drives found that the "regular" Legacy GT engine easily overwhelmed the suspension and dynamic handling capability of the rest of the car... I wonder if the spec. B helps in this regard?

As for the suspension on any legacy, you have ( and have is a must) to change both sway bars for aftermarket ones, it  changes the cars drive to another level.

Just wondering if anyone (or the editor) would know how the Spec.B would compare to the old Lexus IS 300 5-speed manual, or perhaps maybe even the dearly departed Honda Prelude (even though it has 2 less doors)? This car seems awful expensive, and I'd like to know how it stacks up to the other cars in this price range. Any comments would be great! Thanks.

Says Wing in his review:

"The shifter kind of feels like a stick with a rubber bouncy ball attached to it and as you change gates the ball clunks into the proper gear but mutes the true mechanical feel."

I'm not sure if that's an improvement over my suggestion that the 5-speed in the regular LGT feels like "a bunch of rubber bands and gravel".   Wink

In fairness, James... I think anyone who drives a Honda or BMW regularly would be hard-pressed not to find any other company's stick shift a dramatic step backward.

My Mom's 96 Outback I would describe as the rubber bands without the gravel - feels like stirring dough if that's possible.

@ 46k, it is wayyy overpriced.  It is lacking alot of features that other cars in the same price range offers.  Subaru currently has the highest price difference between Canada and the US right now.  Same car in the states goes for USD33k, which translate to 8k difference at the very least.

I'll agree with the missing features, although they are hit and miss.

No auto up / down, no auto wipers or headlights, no HIDs some stuff you might expect.

I dislike++ driving through Detroit. Near the border = scary. We'd never go through that area at night for instance.
