Day-by-Day Review: 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe 3.8GT; Day 3
So the Genesis Coupe isn't the most practical sports car around, says James, but what really matters here is how the car drives. And it's in that department that this car really shines, he says.

I find the statement from the author that the new Altima is an evolution of the 2002 model misleading considering it is built on a brand new chassis.

I was actually talking more about the styling than the underpinnings there. Cool

...
Did the rear suspension feel upgraded in the 2007.  This is IMO a weak area for Nissan/Infiniti.
Particularly so when the previous model Altima had quite a significant recall on the entire rear superstructure.

Make:   NISSAN
Model:   ALTIMA
Affected Year(s):2006
Units Affected:   32
TC Recall #:   2006040
Manufacturer:
Campaign Code:   R105

"The die used for stamping the rear suspension subframe was out of specification during three days of production. As a result, the thickness of the attachment bracket for the rear lower link may be less than the minimum specification. This could result in a crack forming in the attachment bracket. If a crack propagates through the bracket, the rear lower link may separate from the bracket. Under certain severe driving conditions, stability of the vehicle may be compromised, leading to a loss of vehicle control. Correction: Dealers will inspect and, if required, replace the rear suspension subframe. "

According to Transport Canada 32 units were recalled, probably much more in the US simply because, but I would call that hardly significant.

US recalls:

06 Nissan Altima and Sentra

Could consume excessive quantities of motor oil because of faulty piston rings. If oil level isn't maintained, fire or engine damage could result.

Models: 85,000 cars with 2.5-liter engines.

What to do: As of July 3, Nissan hadn't devised a repair solution. However, the company has contacted owners, instructing them to check and maintain proper oil level. For information, call 800-647-7261.

'03 Nissan Altima and Sentra

Engine could stop without warning while vehicle is driven at slow speed, possibly causing crash.

Models: 200,866 cars with 2.5-liter engines. Hazard exists because of the location of a sensor in the engine compartment. Under certain driving conditions, temperature fluctuations could cause a brief interruption in the signal from the sensor, possibly leading to engine stoppage.

What to do: Have dealer reprogram electronic control module (ECM). For information call Nissan at 800-647-7261.

'02-03 Nissan Altima

Problem:
In extreme cold, engine could suddenly stall, resulting in possible crash.

Models:
377,000 cars made 8/01 to 5/03 and sold or registered in Alaska, Colo., Conn., Idaho, Ill., Ind., Iowa, Kan., Maine, Mass., Mich., Minn., Mo., Mont., N.D., Neb., N.H., N.Y., Ohio, Pa., R.I., S.D., Utah., Vt., Wisc., and Wyo. Hazard exists because moisture in fuel tank could freeze and form ice crystals. The crystals could obstruct the suction opening of fuel pump, blocking the flow of fuel to engine.

What to do:
Have dealer install screen at suction opening of fuel pump to prevent ice crystals from blocking opening.

’02 Nissan Altima and Xterra

Problem: Airbag may not deploy in crash.

Models: 64,562 vehicles, including Altimas made from 6/01 to 10/01 and Xterras made from 6/01 to 11/01.

What to do: Have dealer install retaining clip on clock spring electrical connector in steering wheel.

I had hopes that the newly redesigned Altima would make my list of cars worthy of consideration. But they failed to address the one item that kept the previous generation from making my list -- and in fact, made it even worse: the gawdawful-looking "euro" taillights. Those things are atrocites. Unfortunately that style (I use the term loosely) is appearing on more and more models, and more and more models are getting crossed off my list as a result: Ford Fusion, Mazda CX-9....

I thought that clear lens = sporty or zoom-zoom, it seems Mazda and Nissan have them on most of their cars nowadays.

I just came back from driving a 2007 2.5 CVT in Florida for 8 days and really enjoyed the vehicle. The keyless start was actually pretty handy. I managed to rum the average fule consumption from day one wich was at 24.5 when I started to 27.5 by th end of the week so the mileage was pretty good. It drove very quietly and handled well with good visablity.

I did not like the trunk hinges and the drivers seat was too flat with little thigh support and was also too firm, this might improve with a highre model grade and power seat. Aside from not having good space for the dog I would serioulsy consider this car.

Too bad that this was neglected - as Nissan seemed to tend to everything else that was marginal or problematic with the previous model. Few things can compensat for a seat that is short on thigh length - especially if you are long-legged. The trunk hinge issue unfortunately results in the loss of as much as a couple of cubic feet on either side of the trunk. Not fun when you are crushing groceries.  Sad
