I've painted a couple vehicles already, but both times I had access to a workshop with grinders and sanders, plus spraying equipment. The process was to grind away all existing rust, then use acid to get it out of the pits, fill or fix the holes, prime the bare metal and then spray paint with a proper gun and two part epoxy. In a parking lot it's more difficult, even the sander is too noisy, and the neighbors with good vehicles are not fond of overspray.

So I scraped and hand sanded the worst of the rust off, deglossed the paint, and painted the nasty bits with some POR rust sealant I had sitting around. Cleaned it, masked it, and went at it with the foam roller.

Seemed very dubious to me, a long way from how I painted things before. Of course this is basically a wagon with a steering wheel.

Carb kit was 300 bucks plus shipping

I assume that is with the air cleaner housing.  Thats an amazing price for all of that. I bought a metric ss bolt the other day and it cost me $10.  Roll Eyes

Yeah, that's everything. I guess the Italians have a lot of pot metal laying around and they paid for the 32/36 tooling twenty years ago. Shipping was only 30 bucks, and no GST. I phoned around locally and couldn't get anywhere close. One parts girl said finally that if I could get a new carb for that price just buy it.

And of course if the truck does go boom I can resell the kit on ebay so I'm not really risking much.

Everything went against the painting working out, it took twice as long as expected so I finished in the dark, it got very cold overnight, and the next day it rained solid, the first rain in Lethbridge for three months. As a result the paint has a rough texture. And it's never been good bodywork weather since to finish the rest of the truck.

Still I am very happy with how it worked out for so cheap, and wonder why I didn't do it years ago. Foam rollers actually paint not badly at all.

I also had surprisingly good results with a foam roller on the old Pathfinder. A friend gave me a tip to use a marine enamel for paint. Picked up a gallon of gloss black at the hardware store for 40 bucks.  Grin

There's a few things to fix on it before winter. The big one today was adding a header to replace a rusted out casting that the rest of the exhaust didn't want to connect to anymore and the exhaust shops didn't want to weld.

JCWhitney came through with a Pacesetter header for 120.00. Ten bucks tax (GST prepay?) 31.00 shipping (Fed Ex, right to the door, no extra charges). Yay high dollar!
