Really?? Lessee, the SRT8's as-tested price was (gasp) $62,695. For that you can buy an '08 Subaru Impreza Sport ($23,195), an '08 Nissan Versa SL hatchback ($18,573) and still have almost 21 grand left over for a nice used SUV. (hopefully a small one)  There's your 3 cars. Grin

Oh My God!  Really???  Because I'm sure there's absolutely no other costs to owning a vehicle.  Like, say...  insurance.  Finding somewhere to park it.  Equipping them all with winter tires.   Roll Eyes  Not to mention the SRT8 starts closer to $50k.  And neither the WRX or the Versa offer the same combination of size, practicality, and safety that the Jeep does.

Yes it is. Unlike the Mustang or Challenger, the SRT8 pretends to be useful because of it's huge size. It's back seat is almost useless by regular people, so the SRT8 sounds stupid to me.

Actually, unlike the Mustang or Challenger, the Jeep is useful because it has decent-sized rear seats, a big cargo area, and AWD.  Not to mention available DVD entertainment and navigation.  Sounds perfect for the family with two kids in little league who can't afford three vehicles!

Unless you're going to try and argue that rear seats, cargo space, and AWD are all completely useless, I don't see where you're coming from.  But please, do try and convince me just how stupid we all are for wanting cars that can seat five, carry luggage, and drive confidently in the winter!   Popcorn

I find the fuel figures a little hard to swallow.  How hard was this car pushed?  I think the people that buy it are gonna have fun for the first week or so, but then they'll start driving normal - which would lower the consumption.

Not very hard. I don't drive hard as a rule, and am especially easy on the gas in vehicles like this, just so I don't destroy my monthly gas budget (I have a cool job, but I don't get to pick what I drive). That said, we have to hammer the gas a few times, at least, to get a feel for how the vehicle performs. It's probably important to point out that my usual driving routine is mostly city driving, so the fact that I only went over the NRCan city rating by a couple litres/100 km is almost respectable considering how powerful this truck is.

Though more expensive, the G Cherokee CDI is much more attractive to me than the SRT-8.  Fack I'm getting old.

Off the record, I have been looking into the CX-7, a used Range Rover, FX35, and even that CDI GCherokee (but that model is getting old for my tastes).  Undecided

As a whole I feel the Grand Cherokees are space ineffecient and somewhat uncompetitive. The HEMI and CDI are redeeming qualities.

Have to say I LOVE the SRT8 sound and central exhaust. Can only imagine the fun I'd have piloting that beast. Would be a ball to drive, but not my thing to own.

Also, the point of a vehicle like this?  Fun!  A coworker of mine bought his when they first came out, he still owns it, and drives it even in the sick Alberta weather.  He loves it.  He can hang with a Corvette during the summer, he still has 4x4 stick with good rubber in the winter, and the space, although crappy for an SUV, is still far from cramped.
