So the Genesis Coupe isn't the most practical sports car around, says James, but what really matters here is how the car drives. And it's in that department that this car really shines, he says.

Something else for the Detroit show? RX-9 anyone?
Railton

It bears a striking resemblance to the Kabura concept, whose engine bay could accommodate either Mazda's 2.3L inline-four or a rotary.

I always liked the Kabura concept, and suspected it would eventually become a production car.

That is SICK.

Like I said in the other thread, I hope this spawns a street-going supercar, a la Nissan GT-R.  It could be one hell of a halo car for Mazda, adding prestige to the RX-8, MX-5, MS3, and MS6.

So the North America Car of the Year is the Malibu and the Truck is the CX-9! The Malibu bested the CTS and the Accord. The CX-9 bested the Enclave and the Tahoe Hybrid.

The Fisker Karma...

http://www.autoblog.com/2008/01/14/detroit-2008-fisker-karma-draws-a-crowd-impresses/

Looks like a hellava luxurious high-tech vehicle for $80,000. Can't be right, can it?

Fisker plans premium plug-in by late 2009

Leslie J. Allen
Automotive News
January 14, 2008 - 1:21 pm ET

DETROIT -- Fisker Automotive plans to sell the first of its premium plug-in hybrid vehicles in the fourth quarter of 2009.

The suburban Los Angeles company, formed by former Aston Martin head designer Henrik Fisker, showed a production version of the Fisker Karma today at the auto show.

The sporty Karma will start at $80,000. It combines a four-cylinder engine with a lithium ion battery pack.

The Karma will plug into an ordinary household outlet and take about eight hours to charge on a 110-volt system and less time on a 220-volt system. Once fully charged, the vehicle will go 50 miles on electricity alone, Henrik said.

He said the vehicle will be produced in North America.

The Karma is a joint project of Fisker and Quantum Fuel Systems Technologies Worldwide Inc.

The sporty car has a solar panel on the roof to help recharge the battery. When running on gasoline, the vehicle is tuned to produce a sound " somewhere between a Formula One car and a jet plane," Henrik Fisker said.

I have to say that I am thoroughly disappointed at an auto journalist would rank 5 trucks as a "must see" at North America's biggest auto show.

I see the Audi pavilion is ranked, so the author has a pulse for driving.  But what happened to the Corvette ZR1?  Challenger?  Nissan GT-R?  Those cars are not 'worthy' for a top 10?

Perhaps they are taking up so much press that maybe her list was a little different to spotlight other vehicles needing some attention.  Whatever the reason, Jil's list is definitely a (unique?) list.

My list would have skipped most of those trucks but hey I'm no truck guy.

I'd say you must see the new Ram then I'd say Hyundai Genenis, Audi booth in general, Mercedes and VW as well.

Perhaps the mini clubman is worth a peak for interest sake, don't skip toyota as the LFA and Venza are worth a peak for sure.

Then the standby Lambo / Ferrari combo and the Fisker.

I was at the show Friday.  I got every 3 or 4 years...and I'm always amazed at the number of vehicles you can sit in vs. the Toronto "dealer" show.

A couple of comments:
  • Oh happy, happy day...there are more choices than black interiors
  • As much as I loathe cars getting larger, the new A4 is gorgeous.
  • The CTS is an awesome piece.  I liked the interior better than the Audi A4
  • They brought a CTS MANUAL to the show...good for them
  • The quality of the "cheap" cars is amazing
  • I found myself liking the Scion xB a lot...you always want what you can't have!
  • Seeing it in person, the RX8 seems "over-done"
  • While other displays were packed, you could shoot a cannon off at Jag/LR and not hit anyone
