CarTalkCanada Review: 2008 Audi A5
On the road, the A5 is two different cars, depending on what mood you're in: quiet and composed on the highway but a ton of fun in the twisties, with lots of power to push you through corners.

The Evo might look better, but I'd take the new STI over it.

How do the two compare performance wise?

How do the two compare performance wise?

The STI has more power and less weight, giving it an acceleration advantage, but the EVO handles better in chicanes.  The STI, while still utterly superb, has less body control and more understeer than the EVO.

The AWD system on the EVO is more advanced than the STi's, on paper anyway.

Well as much as I was looking forward to potentially purchasing this car after waiting for both the new STI and EVO to reveal themselves, I'm dissapointed to see that Mitsubishi has effectively priced themselves out of the market!

I note that Subaru has got their pricing much more in line now compared to the previous STI, we Canucks only have to pay a premium of 10% (45k vs 39.5k) now vs a comparably equipped (read loaded) US car, as they only sell one version here. Mitsubishi somehow reckons their car is worth 25% more here! (42k vs 33k for the base 6sp), and if you want all the goodies and trick transmission we have to pay 51.5k vs 39k

Well, maybe I will hold on for the Ralliart version, hopefully they get the pricing RIGHT on that one, but I'm not holding my breath.

come on Mitsubishi wake up, if you don't lower your prices here in Canada, I'm just going to wait six months till the demand cools off and buy one in the US!

If Mitsu sells out their EVOs at the price they setted, I doubt if they would care too much about your business.
If they don't sell well, which I doubt is going to happen, then they will lower their prices.

Pricing is fairly competitive in Canada for the base model, but find the MRs pricey - especially since I think the US packages are substantially less for the same thing.

The Super-AWD sounds an awful lot like Acuras SuperHandling-AWD.

Also, for a change not diggin' white as much as some other colours. Plus, in the rear photo of the white one the lower bumper black part is not integrated well with the bumper reflectors / white upper IMO.

While one hellava sporty car, I would probably grab the other - Impreza WRX STI.

The GSR is the better choice for tuners by far, rumor has it from EvolutionM.net that the new SST can't handle too much power over stock anyway (which probably means the new Ralliart can't handle much past 300).

Aquaman Mitsu's S-AYC AWD has been in used in the Evo VIII, just not in the ones brought to North America.  So this technology isn't too new to Evo's.  The USDM bumper is different than the Canadian bumper, the one we get is  more bulky  Thumbs Down.

I'm sensing there's a lot of pent up demand for the Evo in Canada and they will sell out this year at this pricing. I'm sure Mitsu is counting on this.

Price wise and equipment wise the STi wins hands down.  For $3500 you get xenons, navi forge BBS rims and heated seats.  For the money I'd go STi.  My lease runs out his summer and these two cars are in my radar.  I feel the Mitsu is a bit over priced.

If something goes wrong, the $10 000 saved on the purchase price pays for a lot of repairs.  If you put that $10k in the bank and collect interest, you probably won't have anything to worry about.

Double check your prices. Subaru Canada's site says the STI Starts at $44,995 which puts it in the same basic range as the EVO which ranges from $41,500 to $51,500. It appears to me that both companies are taking advantage of the old exchage rates to make the maximum profit, not just Mitsu.

With out driving either car its hard to know whats accurate but it sounds that the EVO 4WD system is the more high tech while subaru's while very effective has less technological nannies, if you were going to rally the cars I suspect the EVO would make a less skilled driver look more god like the the STI. At the advertised prices, for some one not actively using the cars in competition I see little advantage to either car. Its only in how the EVO can be tarted up with more DOO DADs for those who really "need" blue tooth, fast key and a sunroof in their high performance car or can be more basic without the extras while Subaru doesn't offer different trim levels that would differentiate between them for a lot of potential buyers.

I am probably close to their target buyer but I have issues with paying 20 or 25% more then some one a few hundred miles away, which would keep me from biting on either. I will be interested in how many people will ignore that little detail just to get either car. I personally hope neither car sales well till they bring prices more in line but realistically expect that both companies will sell all they chose to make available.

Good to note.

S-AYC AWD I guess is more unique than plain 'old "AWD" used by most anyway, worth the extra letter(s) being more advanced than others. They had to brand with the Symetrical, SH, Quattro, xDrive, 4Motion, yada-yada-yada out there...

At least Mitsu made the effort to make the Evo Cdn compliant this time around, doesn't look hideous just noticable  Smiley
