CarTalkCanada Review: 2008 Audi A5
On the road, the A5 is two different cars, depending on what mood you're in: quiet and composed on the highway but a ton of fun in the twisties, with lots of power to push you through corners.

Test Drive:
2008 Volkswagen City Golf

2008 Volkswagen City GolfThe City Golf is "the best way to enjoy German engineering and a new-car warranty for significantly less than $20,000," says Contributing Editor, Chris Chase.  The optional six-speed automatic "keeps the motor in the meaty part of its rev range," he reports.

Oh boy!  I hadn't read ANY reviews of the City Golf/City Jetta yet.

-Old tech engine
-With options, prices climb, not that great of a deal
-Why would you buy an "old" new car?

/ Thread.

Am I missing anything?

I was joking, because maybe it's just an illusion, or maybe I'm confusing it with something else, but there seems to be a new City Golf/City Jetta article about once a month.

And for the record, THIS is the cheap VW that would get me excited.  While I love my MkIV, it's a great car for 2004, not necessarily 2008:

I saw a silver one yesterday on the 401. It actually looks better in real life than in the pictures and I particularly liked the rear lights, and am so envious of the Euro style amber turn signals which my Passat lacks.

I personally don't have an issue with "old" engine technology that others have pointed out as a negative. It's established, proven and has been improved upon. (I have no qualms sitting in a Boeing 747 but occasionally say a silent prayer when sitting in a fly-by-wire Airbus...lol).

The price point is compelling also. I think the City Golf will do very well in the market.

Do you say a similar prayer every time you fire up your drive-by-wire Passat?  Wink Grin

It is currently the best selling VW model in Canada.
Used to be the Jetta IV (even when the Jetta IV was more expensive than the Golf IV), seems like consumer preference is switching to hatchbacks.

Then BMW is just in time with the 1-series!  Except they dumbed it down into a coupe to appease the Americans...   Angry

They love SUVs, but they hate hatches.  I don't get it...  someone should point out to them that an SUV is really just a jacked up hatchback.   ROFL

And a wagon is just a long hatch!  Cheesy

Depends on the vehicle, I think.  A compact or even mid-size SUV I would call a hatch on steroids.  Observe, Infiniti FX35 slammed:

It actually reminds me of the Mazda3, and I think it's gorgeous.  Infiniti needs to start selling something like this as a hot hatch...  Drool

They have already attempted that...with the EX35.  Huh

Good point - I'd forgotten about the EX35.  I'm thinking of something more affordable, though - like a smaller, five-door 350Z with AWD and US pricing.  It would compete with the Speed6, WRX, Lancer Ralliart, and R32.

To be fair, I guess it would be under the Nissan name, not Infiniti, but based on the EX perhaps.  I also doubt it will ever happen, which is a shame - the EX and FX are gorgeous, but too SUV and not enough sport imo.

I saw one yesterday also and was also impressed with the exterior refresh. I think it looks better than the Rabbit...

I say a prayer when riding on any Airbus. Riding in an airplane originating in the home countries of Simca, Citroen, British Leyland and Rootes fails to give me much confidence. I just hope they don't have Lucas electrics.  Wink

Simca - now that's a name I haven't heard in a long time. Right now as I type there is probably a well preserved Simca in 'Allo 'Allo country taking a beret capped farmer to the weekly Garlic market.... ROFL
