Day-by-Day Review: 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe 3.8GT; Day 3
So the Genesis Coupe isn't the most practical sports car around, says James, but what really matters here is how the car drives. And it's in that department that this car really shines, he says.

2009 Volkswagen Jetta Wagon

2009 Volkswagen Jetta WagonThe "eye-catching" new Jetta Wagon is "bigger in all exterior dimensions," reports Senior Editor, Paul Williams.  A 2.5-litre inline five cylinder engine is standard while a 2.0-litre TDI diesel engine will be available this fall.  Prices range from $23,475 to $31,675.

Looks like a decent effort with pricing that is finally approaching a reasonable premium for the Canadian market. Too bad they're not offering a 4motion version. If it was priced around 35k for a "highline" trim it probably wouldn't steal sales from the 3.6 Passat but would be a welcome option for Outback/Legacy buyers.

Competitors are few, if any. Similar vehicles are the Hyundai Elantra wagon and the Volvo V40, but neither of those is in the Jetta Wagon's market segment. Other alternatives are hatchbacks like the Toyota Matrix/Pontiac Vibe.

What about the Subaru Legacy, which is priced right in the middle of the Jetta's trims ($27 995)?  Nice review, otherwise - I agree that ESP and side curtain airbags should be standard, especially in Canada.

Given that it looks like ESP will be mandatory in a couple of years it seems strange not to have it as standard on all but low end entry level cars

So the new Jetta is similar to  my old beloved 2003 1.8T Passat wagon. Looks good but I would rather have a six speed and the 2.0T.

Traded in my 1990 Passat Wagon last November for a popular
Japanese 2003 SUV.    Much regret this action, despite the money
I had spent on the Passat over recent years, to me it was a much
better car in content, comfort and space.
May well be looking at these when they appear in the Showrooms.

A '90 Passat would have been a tank. Sat in one recently and couldn't get over the solid German clunk-quality or believe the amount of usable space.

Dealers have 'em but I've yet to see one on the road. Wagons aren't hot sellers, most of these buyers probably waiting for the TDI.

Maybe somebody should have told VW this.  Wink

Offer a GLI trim version with a 2.0T engine and 6 speed manual transmission and I would have a serious look at this car.

VW wagons a poplur in certain areas of the country - like here in Ottawa.  About 70% of the MKIV wagons were TDIs.  Also it doesn't help that VW Canada is not adveritising them and only recently put them on their webiste.
