Day-by-Day Review: 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe 3.8GT; Day 3
So the Genesis Coupe isn't the most practical sports car around, says James, but what really matters here is how the car drives. And it's in that department that this car really shines, he says.

Day 1:

2008 Audi A3 S-Line
I still remember it like it was yesterday -- it was 2005 or 2006 (okay, so I can't remember when but I remember what) and I was at the Toronto Autoshow at the annual CarTalkCanada get together.  We had just arrived at the Audi booth, all jazzed about taking a seat in the A3.  This woman says to her friend "Hey so-and-so has one of these, it's TINY, and WOW look at the price for this tiny thing!"  More ...

Drool

I flat out love the A3.

I wonder, at that price, how close are we getting to the S3?

Is that true Quattro AWD?

Please tell me you're taking THIS car to the track? Burn Out

Its Haldex I believe.

Its a nice car to be sure but at the high end I'd rather get a A4 Avant 2.0T, real quattro, and chipped. The low end is interesting, have to compare vs. GTI/GLI but I suspect there is enough value there to spring for the Audi.

I really like the look of the A3 but at $50K that is steep. I wonder what price the 2.0T/DSG/Quattro will come in at?

WHY OH WHY will Audi not equipt their vehicles with 6MT / AWD / 2.0T configuration any more???

My heart's answer: because they have begun to suck.

My brain's answer: because almost nobody was buying that combination in North America.

You are probably right there.   Although for Torsen diehards I wish they could find a way to de-Haldexize the transverse cars `and put a proper purel;y mechanical Torsen in them

By the time you're done with that mechanical switcheroo, you probably would have spent enough money to have just bought an S5 to begin with.

This is not the same 3.2 V6 as in the Audi A5.  The A3's unit is a non-direct injection, 15° narrow-angle VR6 motor, as opposed to the A5's 90° direct-injection V6.  The VR6 is related most closely to the old 2.8 liter VW motor that got introduced in the early 90s while the A5's V6 has much more in common with the 4.2 liter Audi V8.

Though they both say "3.2" on them, the real displacements are as follows:

A3: 3189 or 3195 cc (depending on who you ask) from 84 mm bore/95.9 mm stroke
A5: 3197 cc from 84.5 mm bore/92.8 mm stroke

As for the Haldex/Torsen argument, yes, Haldex is a reactive, less "pure" system.  However, because it moves around the torque based on throttle, you can actually steer the car a lot with your right foot, like in a RWD car, and it all feels very natural and smooth.

But it's not as luxurious that's for sure.  Depends on your priorities.

P.S.  I'll be reviewing an STI mid July I believe.

Really more luxurious?  Wow the STi must be bad, because I sat in the Evo at the dealership and wasn't all that impressed.  Of course the seats were great, but the rest is rather basic..... ah can't wait to hit the track with one Wink

Well to be sure, neither of those are "luxury" cars.  Perhaps the word I should have used is "nicer".  I thought the EVO was "nicer" on the inside than the Sti...

Why Audi A3 3,2 s line quattro in the USA has MSRP $ 34,915.00. Shouldn't we in Canada pay as much ? Huh Huh
