Once you have met, and hung out with the PR people and start to understand the workings -- you would understand they don't really have the ability to even get "ringers."  They could send us pre-production models that are not as good as the production model but that is about it.

The manufacturers are honest, I think you are thinking of dealerships Wink

I don't think the PR people have anything to do with the pricing Wink.

You guys are zapping the fun out of this sheesh.  Everyone is so uptight about these things.

Everything needs to be done in a sterile environment to ensure fairness, but then when it is (See EPA numbers) everyone complains it isn't realistic.

The 09 Corolla is heavier, but the TC ratings are the same thanks to aero and engine tweaks, so I don't expect the Corolla to make any gains.  But, it has more safety gear and more power.

The Civic has a larger engine than in 05, but again, the TC ratings are about the same.

I think the Civic and Corolla will duke it out for #1, and will be within 50km.

Perhaps the last test (done three years ago) where Civic won by a large margin was a fluke?  Civic did beat the NRcan rating by a considerable margin.

I've been following www.oee.nrcan.gc.ca/vehicles for several years, and every single year the Corolla tops the Civic in gas mileage.

Just curious, and forgive me if this has already been addressed, but once the cars run out of gas when you fill them up and note how many litres actually were required to fill it?   

Will go with Civic, Corrolla and Mazda 3.

Now if the test involved freeway speeds of 120 or so then it would be a different story.

WOW! I could never match those numbers with the 08 civic I used to own and that would be driving 10 under the speed limit.  I know 785 KM was the best I could do and that was on the I95 doing 90 until I ran it dry knowing I had a 1 gallon spare in the trunk.  At 110 KM the best I could get was 775KM and that was on the flats of North/South Dakota.

Then again I had the best lemon the factory could offer at the time. Driving 2

Very interesting but not unexpected results. Johngenx would be proud.

The compact car segment has grown up so much. With impressive safety and interior room available these days, its difficult to make a case for a midsize car.

A similar test for midsize cars would be interesting.

Pickles, I would not put much faith in this test.  It is way too unscientific.  I don't know why they didn't just fill them up, drive them dry, fill them up again and divide the actual number of kilomtres driven by the actual number of litres burned.

 

The way it was done one must assume that 50 litre tank actually holds just 50 litres and that they accurately burned off 5 litres for those cars that supposedly have a 55 litre tank.  Further, as mentioned in a previous post, the cars were supplied by the manufacturers and not chosen by the testers.

Sorry to be pessimistic. However, I would not base a car purchase on the results of this test.

Sorry to be pessimistic. However, I would not base a car purchase on the results of this test.

I would never buy ANY car based on the results from ANY test I read about. The only test that matters is my own.

As to this test....I think its great and can help some buyers with their choices.
