Day-by-Day Review: 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe 3.8GT; Day 3
So the Genesis Coupe isn't the most practical sports car around, says James, but what really matters here is how the car drives. And it's in that department that this car really shines, he says.

NOTE: This is CanadianDriver's Official Thread for all things Toronto Autoshow

The Canadian Press

December 12, 2008 at 7:45 AM EST

MISSISSAUGA — Porsche Cars Canada says it won't have a display at the Toronto auto show in 2009 as it re-evaluates its marketing strategies.

The automaker says it wants to find “better, more targeted ways” to reach potential customers and must look beyond auto shows.

Porsche Canada marketing director Jasmin Rawlinson says the Toronto auto show is important and the company “did not take this decision lightly.”

The auto show runs from Feb. 13 to 22 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre and the Rogers Centre.

Nissan recently said it is pulling out of the Detroit and Chicago auto shows, citing the tough economy and the lack of new vehicles to unveil.

Mitsubishi, Land Rover, Rolls-Royce and Suzuki will also skip the Detroit show next month as automakers trim their budgets in a difficult economy.

No great loss...I've never found their displays very inspiring anyway.

If they want to better target their market then can give me a yellow Cayman to drive around the GTA ~ 40,000 km annually.

Well, if they skip the Edmonton show, I doubt anyone would even notice.  The cars are all roped off and locked and Randy M. is there (Edmonton Porschephiles know of who I speak) acting like his doesn't stink looking down his nose at all non-hockey players.

With the attitude that Porsche has had toward Canadian customers, wouldn't bother me one little bit if they went broke...

Those long faces are still refusing to move on pricing so they will continue to have long faces...

It is probably cheaper for Porsche to direct marketing by email and having a display at the show.  I keep getting email from them to drop by for a test drive.

The fun part of the show is seeing how many CTCers can squeeze into a small car.  Smiley

IMO there's isn't much reason for Porsche to go.

--911 design has been around for 45+ years
--Boxster design is 10+ years old
--Cayman is just a hardtop Boxster
--Cayenne is....well enough said.

Nothing compelling in the least to see.  People are thinking of buying a Porsche don't decide to do it because they see on at an Autoshow....

How many people who buy a Porsche would go to the auto show?

It's called creating future buyers.  A long time ago I visited Norden in Edmonton, before Randy and his super-snob BS took over.  Bob O'Bertos was still the main Porsche guy.  I was just out high-school and went purely to see the cars.  I went when the showroom was empty, and Bob took the time to go through the various cars with me.  His own enthusiasm and knowledge of the cars was like a virus and I caught it.

It wasn't too long before I was standing in that showroom with my money, ready to buy.  Not new, but one of their fine selection of used cars.  Bob was replaced with Randy and he basically booted me off the property.  I found my car privately.  In the PCA, I met quite a few people that had been Porsche-infected by Bob, lucky enough to buy cars from him, and became Porschephiles.

Yes, the new car buyers keep Porsche afloat, but they don't build the reputation that creates long term viability.  The enthusiasts do that, and participating in clubs, car shows, racing, and what ever, is part of that.  Porsche is not Toyota...

Yeah, I'm bummed that I won't get my poster this year.  I must have at least 10 years' worth of those things!

Porsche won't be missed at the show?  Ha!  I don't see any other displays letting me sit in Porsches.  It'll be missed by me!  I blame their new PR guy  Wink

Rrocket, it's funny you say that people don't go to the show to buy Porsches.  Every year I'm at the show, there's always some fat cat buying a Lambo, Bentley, Roller or Ferrari, or at least a "SOLD" sticker slapped on the windshield.  Work on Bay street, hop over to the show on lunch hour, buy a car.  Some of those guys can do it easily.
