RICHMOND, BC (May 4, 2005) – Fraser Wharves Ltd. set a new record at Fraser River Port for the greatest number of vehicles discharged from a single ship, when M.V. COUGAR ACE delivered 5,214 automobiles on May 4, 2005.

The cars – a mixture of new Mazda, Toyota, Lexus, and Mitsubishi automobiles destined for the Canadian marketplace – arrived aboard one of MOL's Pure Car Carriers, M.V. COUGAR ACE. The new record beats Fraser Wharves' recent record of 4,936 automobiles, set over the Easter weekend in March by another one of MOL's car carriers, M.V. LIBERTY ACE.

"This is a Canadian record," said Peter Liu, Vice President of Fraser Wharves Ltd., "We congratulate the Captain and crew of M.V. COUGAR ACE, and everyone at our facility who has been a part of this historic event at Fraser Wharves Ltd."

Visitors on hand to celebrate the record-setting delivery with the vessel's master, Captain W.H. Steinmetz, included: Mayor Malcolm Brodie, City of Richmond; Captain Allen Domaas, President and CEO of the Fraser River Port Authority; Peter Ng, Port Superintendent for Montship Inc.; Captain Alex Smith, Vice President of P&O Ports Canada Inc.'s Canadian Stevedoring; Dave Suttis, Manager, General Cargo Operations for P&O Ports Canada Inc.'s Canadian Stevedoring; Jack Labinsky, Business Agent for ILWU Local 502; Ernie Moore, National Manager, Corporate Logistics for Toyota Canada Inc.; Mike Taylor, Manager Port Operations for Toyota Canada Inc.; Tony Smith, Manager of Vehicle Planning and Distribution for Mazda Canada Inc.; Craig Swindells, Business Management Manager for Mazda Canada Inc.; Kevin Hugel, Specialist, Vehicle Distribution for Mazda Canada Inc.; Patrick Bornestig, District Sales and Service Manager, Mazda Canada Inc.; Masayuki Hirose, President of Fraser Wharves Ltd., and Peter Liu, Vice President of Fraser Wharves Ltd.

Captain Domaas presented the Captain with a plaque noting the record-setting occasion, on behalf of Fraser River Port, Fraser Wharves Ltd., and Montship Inc.

M.V. COUGAR ACE was launched June 29, 1993. The ship has an overall length 199.53 meters and a gross registered tonnage of 55,328 tonnes. The unloaded cars from the ship will be stored on Fraser Wharves' 107-acre site, which includes a 14-acre water portion, where they will then be processed and loaded aboard trains and trucks for shipment to various Canadian destinations.

They will rust away very quickly under the salt water so there's no reason to worry about the salvage at all. Hopefully there is not much fuel or oil in the vehicles to polute the area as well.

I think I read hundreds of tons of diesel and heating oil.  Not good.

Its not the 1st car carrier to go down in the last few years as there was one just last year alone. We had the pics on here about a year ago. They didn't survive very well after there dip.

Barrie, I'm less concerned about the cars than I am about the ship's fuel and any other liquid cargo.

Does the dealer have to charge more for freight and PDI?

Instead of floor mats, free seafood with the car?

Reports have indictae the following:

1. The ship had been caught in rain squalls and 8- to 10-foot seas when it began to list.
2. From Coast Guard aircraft circling overhead, officers spotted a 2-mile oil sheen in the choppy water.
3. The ship had been carrying 430 metric tons of fuel oil or 112 metric tons of diesel fuel, and it wasn't clear how much had spilled into the northern Pacific Ocean.

Very ugly indeed.

Today’s Toronto Star reads, “A Japanese cargo ship is still listing and afloat off Alaska's Aleutian Islands after the crew was taken off by helicopter on Tuesday, leaving 4,700 Mazda Motor Corp. vehicles aboard (C2). The Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Ltd. ship had been heading to Vancouver, and Mazda, which exports about 70 per cent of its Japanese production, said the cars were being shipped for sale in Canada and the U.S. ‘A salvage ship is on the way, but we won't know the status of the vehicles for about a week,’ Jay Amestoy, Mazda's vice-president for U.S. government affairs, said. "It's tough because the models on board are in very high demand." About 60 per cent of the vehicles are Mazda3 small cars and 25 per cent are CX-7 sport-utility wagons.”

They ARE Mazdas, but the majority not 5's. Rather, the other models in short supply ('07MY 3?). Poor Mazda

The list is what?  80 degrees?  Those cars best be anchored down.  I assume they are, but strongly enough to support the vehicle self-weight?

Modern batteries can be tilted on their side, can't they?  Then what about the other fluid systems?
