Freight and PDI charges in Canada

well i had a good experience buying my tsx.  believe it or not, there are honest and forthright salespeople out there.   this particular salesperson gave me a very good price and made sure my car was being serviced promptly every time i came in years after the sale.  he went out of his way to call me after i told him i was renovating my house to give me a name of a contact where i could buy all of my new appliances.  i ended up getting the best price by almost a thousand dollars.  he actually enjoys dealing with the public and simply helping people out (and to boot, he is a car enthusiast.)  his philosophy is sell as many cars as possible by offering them a solid deal right off the bat, make it an enjoyable experience,  and people will keep coming back.   if i buy another acura i will go straight to his dealer.  this was after having been flat out lied to by a sale guy from downtown acura which was the worst experience i have ever had trying to buy a new car.

Being a wise guy, I sent the following email to Kia Canada.

I am astounded by the amount of Delivery charge Canadians must pay on
the Kia Soul.  I find the $1,695 amount is outrageous when I can drive
to a Kia dealer in the United States, two hours south of Winnipeg, and
pay $740 CDN ($695) for the same service.

I would like Kia Canada to provide some justification for the
overcharging of Canadian customers.

Being a wise guy, I sent the following email to Kia Canada.

I am astounded by the amount of Delivery charge Canadians must pay on
the Kia Soul.  I find the $1,695 amount is outrageous when I can drive
to a Kia dealer in the United States, two hours south of Winnipeg, and
pay $740 CDN ($695) for the same service.

I would like Kia Canada to provide some justification for the
overcharging of Canadian customers.

Its easy for them to justify it. The shipping charge is the same in Halifax as in TO as in Vancouver. The people who are close to the source subsidize those who are far.

But the real reason is irrefutable. BECAUSE THEY CAN.

If you go to Kia AND say I can go to the US and pay 1/2 the freight the thinking is "OK GO AHEAD" 99% of people buying a lower priced car like a soul are not going to go to the work of importing a vehicle to Canada. They will suck it up and pay the freight. The only way to make any difference is to vote with your dollars and actually go to the US and get one.

The same argument doesn't work in the US becuase of one word VOLUME. Canada is geographhically bigger than the US but has 1/10 the population. The US often excludes Alaska and Hawai charging them different rates. Canada does not exclude anything to my knowledge (Newfoundland for example).

Mostly its about volume. If you are shipping a million cars to LA and a Million to NY its going to do more to offset costs than if you ship 1000 to Moncton and 10 to deer lake.
