Secrets of Lexus RX hybrid system
A combination of technological features allows the new Lexus RX 450h to achieve such good fuel economy, reports Senior Editor, Paul Williams – including an Atkinson-cycle engine, three electric motors, a lighter battery, a new CVT, and an electronic controller.
Lexus HS 250h hybrid technology
The hybrid technology in the new Lexus HS250h is borrowed from the third-generation Prius and Camry Hybrid, reports contributor Haney Louka. Though “it doesn’t actually possess any new hybrid technology... it sits at the forefront of mass-production hybrid technology.”
2010 Toyota Prius technology
Technical Editor Jim Kerr reviews the changes to the new 2010 Toyota Prius hybrid that help improve its fuel economy by seven per cent while increasing power by 22 per cent.
Honda FCX Clarity
A “clean sheet” design, the Honda FCX Clarity is a zero emissions hydrogen fuel cell car with a range of 385 kilometres, a refuelling time of five minutes, and performance comparable with a four-cylinder Honda Accord, reports Editor-in-chief, Greg Wilson.
Despite setbacks, Honda powers ahead with fuel cells
The U.S. government is cutting back on funding for automotive hydrogen fuel cell research, but Honda is powering ahead with its own R&D because it believes hydrogen fuel cells have significant advantages over pure electric and hybrid vehicles.
Hydrogen Road Tour 2009
Twelve hydrogen-fuelled fuel cell cars arrived in Vancouver last week after finishing a much-publicized drive from San Diego. But with very few publicly-accessible hydrogen filling stations in North America, the future of mass produced fuel cell cars is still in doubt.
2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid powertrain
Ford’s all-new Fusion Hybrid powertrain offers a number of improvements over the Escape Hybrid’s powertrain, including 20% more power and a battery pack that is 14% smaller, says Technical Editor, Jim Kerr.
GM’s battery strategy
GM and LG Chem are developing an advanced lithium ion battery system for the upcoming Volt electric car, and eighty Volt prototypes will hit the streets this summer, reports Technical Editor, Jim Kerr.
Subaru’s PZEV vehicles
A Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle (PZEV) is very close to a Zero Emissions Vehicle (ZEV), but has some distinct advantages, reports Technical Editor, Jim Kerr. Subaru already has two PZEV models on the market.
GM’s Extended Range Electric Vehicles
Different from hybrid technology, E-REV (extended range electric vehicle) technology uses a battery to power the vehicle and a small gasoline motor to charge the battery when it runs low. E-REVs can also be plugged in at night.
Direct fuel injection vs port fuel injection
Direct fuel injection is replacing port fuel injection, says Technical Editor, Jim Kerr. “Direct fuel injection can increase fuel economy by 15 to 20 per cent and when combined with turbocharging, may see 20 to 30 per cent economy improvements.”
2009 BMW X5 xDrive35d diesel
The torquey, new 3.0-litre twin-turbo six-cylinder diesel engine in the 2009 BMW X5 is quiet and smooth once it’s warmed up, says Contributing Editor, Chris Chase. Average fuel economy is an impressive 9.3 L/100 km (30 mpg).
