Chrysler Group profits down by 90%

At DaimlerChrysler's annual press conference this morning, Chairman Juergen Schrempp reported that the Chrysler Group lost U.S. $1.2 billion in the last quarter of 2000 but netted a $470 million profit for the year - a 90% profit reduction over 1999.

Saturn to pull out of Japan

General Motors Saturn division, which was originally developed to compete against Honda and Toyota in the U.S. market, has pulled out of the Japan market after three years. Saturn sold fewer than 5000 cars in Japan since 1997. GM will concentrate on selling Chevrolet models through its AutoWorld dealerships in Japan which also sell Isuzu and Suzuki models. GM has a part ownership of Isuzu and Suzuki.

More than 100 PT Cruisers parade in downtown Toronto

More than 100 new Chrysler PT Cruisers paraded from the Metro Toronto Convention Centre to the Don Valley Parkway as part of the public opening of the Canadian International AutoShow on Friday morning. The Automobile Journalists Association of Canada named the 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser its Canadian Car of the Year at the AutoShow Preview on Wednesday. After the parade, the PT Cruisers were delivered to Chrysler dealers all over Ontario.

High-performance BMW X5 HP model to go on sale in the Fall

BMW unveiled a new high-performance edition of its X5 Sports Activity Vehicle recently at the Detroit auto show. The X5 HP has a 347 horsepower 4.6 litre V8 engine that's based on the 282 horsepower 4.4 litre V8 found in the X5 4.4i. The new engine will propel the all-wheel-drive X5 from rest to 100 km/h in approximately 6.5 seconds.

Nissan recalls Quest minivans

Nissan is recalling Quest minivans manufactured from April 13, 1992 to August 2, 1998 to replace a fuel tank vent hose that could develop cracks over time and cause a leak. No fires or injuries have been reported. The recall involves approximately 268,000 vehicles in North America. Nissan dealers will repair the hose at no cost to vehicle owners.

Mazda has developed a new fuel cell electric prototype vehicle based on the subcompact Mazda Premacy hatchback. The Premacy FC-EV will begin test runs on public roads for the first time in Japan on February 15.

Honda develops their own fuel cell

Honda Motor Company displayed a new FCX-V3 fuel cell vehicle equipped with a new Honda-designed fuel cell stack yesterday. Earlier Honda FCX cars were powered by fuel cell stacks developed by Ballard Power Systems of Vancouver, including the FCX-V1 introduced in 1999 and a previous version of the FCX-V3 model.

Four 2001 sedans receive five-star ratings in government crash tests

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) latest crash test results reveal the 2001 Chrysler Sebring four-door, Dodge Stratus four-door, Ford Crown Victoria four-door, Lincoln LS four-door, and the Mercury Grand Marquis four-door all received a five star rating for both the driver and passenger in a 35 mph frontal crash.

NHTSA adds 26 fatalities to list of Firestone-tire related deaths

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has updated its report of traffic fatalities related to Firestone ATX, Wilderness, and other tire models under investigation. As of February 2, 2001, 174 fatalities have been reported being related to these tires, an increase of 26 from the 148 that had been reported to the agency as of early December 2000.

Ward's Automotive reports Toyota will build engine plant in Alabama

Ward's Automotive magazine reports that Toyota will make an announcement today concerning plans to build a new V8 engine plant in Alabama. The 4.7 litre V8 engines, currently built in Japan, are used in Toyota's full-size Tundra pickup and Sequoia SUV which are now built in Princeton, Indiana. It was just two weeks ago that Toyota announced an expansion of its West Virginia engine plant to build V6 engines for Lexus SUV's and four cylinder engines for the upcoming Toyota Matrix and Pontiac Vibe.

GM to lay off 1,600 workers

General Motors Canada announced it will lay off 1,600 workers at its automatic transmission plant in Windsor, Ontario. This is in addition to the 1,350 workers who will be laid off from its St. Catharines, Ontario engine plant. The layoffs are a result of slowing auto sales in the U.S.

More than a hundred pre-sold Mercedes-Benz vehicles not delivered due to shipping problems

Over 100 pre-sold Mercedes-Benz vehicles could not be delivered to Canadian customers in January because of shipping problems. Mercedes-Benz Canada delivered 654 vehicles in January, 110 less than the 764 vehicles delivered in January 2000.

250 workers laid off at Ford engine plant in Windsor

250 Ford workers at a Ford engine plant have been laid off. The workers were employed in a secondary production facility that produces V8 and V10 engines for Ford trucks. The main engine plants in Windsor and Essex remain unaffected.

BMW recalls X5 models

BMW is recalling up to 22,000 X5 sport utility vehicles worldwide to inspect a bolt on the steering column. The company said some bolts may not have been fitted properly, and there is a small risk of a loss of steering. X5 owners can have their vehicles inspected for free at BMW dealerships. The X5 is built in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

An Ontario motorcycle racer has become the first Canadian to complete the legendary Paris-Dakar Rally. Lawrence Hacking, 46, of Acton, Ontario, finished in 58th position from a total of 139 riders who started the event.
