Chicago, Illinois - At the Chicago auto show, the Chrysler Group will show the new 2008 Dodge Dakota midsize pickup truck, which offers a new engine with 25 per cent more horsepower and 10 per cent more torque, and with better fuel economy than the previous model. It also features new exterior and interior styling; the new truck arrives in dealerships in August.

"The new 2008 Dodge Dakota was redesigned to broaden its appeal to younger customers with active lifestyles," says Tom Loveless, Director, Dodge Marketing and Global Communications. "Dodge Dakota will attract 25- to 35-year-old individuals who need a vehicle to meet a variety of needs. Depending on an owner's lifestyle, the 2008 Dodge Dakota may be equipped for work or play, but every Dakota is equipped with capability and versatility."

The 2008 Dakota features a new 4.7-litre V8, which produces 290 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque, an increase over the previous 4.7-litre High Output engine. The engine is also capable of operating on E85 ethanol fuel; it features two spark plugs per cylinder, a lightweight piston/rod assembly, reduced accessory drive noise and electronic throttle control. The Dakota comes standard with a 3.7-litre V6 producing 210 hp and 235 lb-ft of torque. Available transmissions are a six-speed manual, four-speed automatic or five-speed automatic; available transfer cases offer four-wheel drive with locked high and low range, or full-time four-wheel drive.

New styling cues include a drop-fender look, new hood and grille, rectangular headlamps, incorporated fog lamps, and a new tailgate spoiler. Body configurations are Extended Cab and Crew Cab, in six trim levels.

Inside, the Dakota is available with YES Essentials stain-resistant fabric, heated bench seats, side curtain airbags, CD/MP3 and SIRIUS satellite radio, and DVD navigation system.
