Detroit, Michigan - General Motors has announced it will debut the convertible version of the Chevrolet Camaro concept that was unveiled at the 2006 North American International Auto Show. The convertible will make its first showing at GM Style, an exclusive, fashion-splashed event combining celebrities, couture and automobiles.

The Camaro convertible concept, painted in Hugger Orange pearl tri-coat paint with twin gunmetal grey sport stripes, is based on the original Camaro concept, with only minor changes required to accommodate the convertible body style. Chevrolet has already announced production plans for the Camaro, which will go on sale in 2009; a production convertible model will be added later that year.

Like the Camaro concept, the Camaro convertible blends a forward-looking design that is mindful of the brand's heritage, with classic long hood/short deck proportions and a wide, wheels-at-the-corner stance. It uses a V8 engine with rear-wheel drive, manual transmission, four-wheel independent suspension and four-wheel disc brakes. It shares exterior dimensions with the Camaro concept, although its windshield surround is changed slightly to accommodate the convertible top.

Styling features include a tonneau cover over the folded top, "halo" headlamps, LED taillamps, rear spoiler, racing-inspired fuel filler door, front-inlet hood scoop inspired by the Corvette Z06, rear fender "gills", anodized aluminum door handles, and 21-inch front and 22-inch rear wheels with accent colour. Its Hugger Orange paint is a contemporary update of the colour originally offered in 1969.

Inside, the Camaro convertible features platinum-tone leather seats with Alcantara suede fabric inserts, tri-coat platinum paint on the door and instrument panels, billet aluminum pedals and shifter, deep-dish three-spoke design, and an instrument panel inspired by first-generation Camaros, including a "round gauges in square holes" design with a deep, three-dimensional appearance, white faces and red pointers.
