Dearborn, Michigan - Ford will unveil three new limited-edition models at the New York Auto Show, the Shelby GT500KR, F-150 Foose Edition and the Ford Expedition Funkmaster Flex Edition, all making their public debut. The trio includes the company's most powerful pickup and most powerful Mustang.
"Marrying great Ford products like Mustang, F-150 and Expedition to strong partners like Shelby, Foose and Flex creates vehicles that are irresistible to customers who want to make the boldest statement they can," says Cisco Codina, group vice president of North America Marketing, Sales and Service. "We are seeing more demand for special wheels and accessories and, of course, from-the-factory packages like the new Eddie Bauer Taurus X and Harley F-150s."
Ford's research indicates that 62 per cent of full-size pickup truck buyers purchase accessories for their vehicles, averaging US$1,700 each, with 73 per cent bought through the dealer. Roughly 30 per cent of crossover buyers purchase accessories. Ford's overall customization business grew 50 per cent in 2006 and could potentially double in the next two years, driven by factory-customized products and a hard focus on wheels, appearance packages and electronics.
Launching next spring in a limited edition of 1,000 units, the Shelby GT500KR features a supercharged 5.4-litre V8 that makes an estimated 540 hp. It includes a custom carbon composite hood with scoops, stainless steel twist-down hood pins, lowered front air dam, and 14-inch Brembo front brakes. Drawing inspiration from the 1968 KR model, the Shelby GT500KR also features 40th Anniversary badging, unique striping and Carroll Shelby signature embroidered seats.
The F-150 Foose Edition, styled by custom hot rod designer Chip Foose, features a lowered suspension, 22-inch wheels, racing stripes, leather-wrapped console and supercharged Triton V8 producing 450 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque. The company says it is the most powerful F-150 since the 2004 Ford SVT Lightning and will be the most powerful half-ton pickup on the market when it debuts.
The Expedition Funkmaster Flex Edition, created by hip hop DJ Funkmaster Flex, is a limited-production, short-wheelbase SUV with two-tone red and black paint, orange pinstriping, custom front fascia, 20-inch chrome-clad aluminum wheels, 340-watt stereo and Sirius Satellite Radio.
