The hit of the 2006 Detroit auto show, the Dodge Challenger concept car resembles the classic 1970 Challenger, but has a longer wheelbase, wider track, a fully independent suspension, and a 425-hp 6.1-litre V8 engine - not to mention modern safety and comfort features. Ford SynUS
Ford describes the SYNUS concept as "a Mobile Urban Sanctuary", but perhaps it's closer to an armoured car. Its mechanicals are derived from the European-market Ford Fiesta, which has a low, flat load floor. The SYNUS features a 134-hp 2.0-litre diesel engine that can run on 20 percent Bio-Mass diesel fuel.

Lexus LF-C
Designed to appeal to the "young, affluent buyer" this high performance Lexus features a front-mounted V8 engine, six-speed sequential automatic transmission, and rear-wheel drive. A unique four-position retractable hardtop enables drivers to switch between coupe, convertible, and targa configurations at the touch of a button. It was designed at Toyota's Calty Design Research Center in California.

Mazda Nagare
With a new "surface language" that will influence future Mazda concepts and production vehicles, the Nagare (na-gah-ray) features a four-passenger interior accessed by two double-length doors that hinge forward and up: the driver is in the middle. The rear seat is a wraparound lounge, with accommodations for three passengers.

Mitsubishi Prototype X

Precursor to the next Evo model, the Prototype X features more aggressive styling than the new Lancer including a working air scoop, 20-inch alloys, and shark-nose grille. Power comes from a turbocharged 2.0-litre four and the X features a new electronic all-wheel-drive system called Super-All Wheel Control (S-AWC) and a new automated manual transmission with paddle shifters.

Toyota MTRC
MTRC stands for "Motor Triathlon Race Car". Designed and built at Toyota's European design studio, the MTRC is designed for three different environments: a smooth track, a city street circuit, and an off-road course. The multi-purpose MTRC may be the all-purpose race-car of the future.
