Winners of 2007 World Automotive Design Competition announced

Toronto, Ontario - The winners of the 2007 World Automotive Design Competition were announced during media day at the Toronto auto show yesterday. This year, the challenge for entrants was to design a car for an aging population that appealed equally to younger drivers, while reflecting environmental realities. 18 schools, representing 61 students and 49 entries, competed this year.

The first-place overall winner was Paul Kim from the Academy of Art University of San Francisco for the Ford Legion; second place overall went to Ryan Campbell, also of the Academy of Art, for his VW Connextion. Third place went to Matthew Finbow of Humber College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning of Toronto for his Concourse. In addition, the Academy of Art University of San Francisco, California, was chosen as this year's Best Design School.

The winning student designer receives $10,000; second place winner $7,500; and third place winner $5,000. The three top designers will also receive a seat of Autodesk SketchBook Pro software. As well, the design school associated with each winner will receive a suite of Autodesk AutoStudio, Autodesd ImageStudio, Autodesk PortfolioWall software and a collection of design learning tools books and DVDs.

This year's judging panel consisted of Moray Callum, Design Director, Ford North America; Robert Cumberford, Design critic: Automobile and Auto & Design magazines; Akira Fujimoto, Editor-in-chief, Car Styling magazine; Ken Gross, Edmunds.com, judge Pebble Beach Councours d'Elegance; and Dan Sims, General Manager, MRDA Design Studio, Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. Mike Simcoe, Executive Director - Design, General Motors North America, assisted with the judging on-site within the Design Studio exhibit at the CIAS.
