Toyota 1/X
Chicago, Illinois - The Toyota 1/X concept has made its North American debut at the Chicago Auto Show. Developed by Toyota Motor Corporation, the Toyota 1/X compact hybrid "offers a glimpse into the next era of automotive technological design."
Pronounced 1/Xth, the name is derived from its vehicle mass, fuel consumption and emissions output, each totalling a fraction of that of other vehicles in its class. It features an aerodynamic ultra-lightweight design that maintains the interior space of the Toyota Prius, but at one-third its weight, partially achieved through the use of carbon fibre reinforced plastic throughout the body frame.
The 1/X roof is produced from a bio-plastic derived from kenaf and ramie plants, and improves heat insulation, emits less carbon dioxide, increases the amount of light entering the cabin, and reduces noise. The four ultra-lightweight seats are made of polyester fabric knitted three-dimensionally for added comfort, acting as a spring that helps create a cushion-like feel for occupants.
The lightweight construction helps the 1/X reach a fuel efficiency target double that of the Prius, operated with an ultra-small hybrid powertrain located under the rear seat. The system combines a home-rechargeable plug-in hybrid unit with a 0.5-litre flexible-fuel engine that is one-quarter the total weight of the Prius powertrain. The vehicle has a possibility of travelling over 600 miles (965 km) on a US4-gallon (15-litre) tank of fuel, while achieving acceleration performance equivalent to the Prius.
Pedestrian-friendly features include non-glare headlights and smaller, thinner wheels with central grooves that help reduce splashing while driving in wet conditions.
