Canada finally gets the legendary "Evo"
Montreal, Quebec - For the first time ever, Canadian enthusiasts will be able to enjoy the legendary Mitsubishi "Evo". Previously denied entry because its bumper design did not meet Transport Canada standards, the first shipment of the all-new, redesigned Evolution arrived in Vancouver earlier this week.
The Evolution uses an all-new, 291-horsepower 2.0-litre turbocharged and intercooled engine, with Mitsubishi's Super-All Wheel Control (S-AWC) dynamic handling system. Canadians will have a choice of the GSR, with new five-speed manual transmission, and the MR, with new six-speed Twin-Clutch Sportronic Shift automated manual transmission with magnesium shift paddles. The MR is also equipped exclusively with Bilstein shock absorbers, Eibach springs, heat-dissipating two-piece brake rotors, BBS forged-alloy wheels and high-intensity discharge headlamps. Available features include a high-end Rockford Fosgate audio system and navigation system.
The all-new 2008 Evolution's 4B11 engine is considerably different from the 4G63 it replaces, with a reinforced cast-aluminum cylinder block replacing the previous iron block, and with aluminum cylinder head, cover and timing chain case. Its inherently lower noise and vibration, plus hydraulic engine mounts, make a balancer shaft unnecessary; it uses a timing chain instead of a belt, and MIVEC variable valve timing is now used on both intake and exhaust camshafts, instead of the previous intake-only. The new engine produces 291 hp to the previous 286, and 300 lb-ft of torque to the previous 289 lb-ft. The revised turbocharger also yields up to 20 per cent quicker response at lower engine speeds.
The Evolution's Super All-Wheel Control regulates drive torque at each wheel by controlling a network of technologies, including an active centre differential, active yaw control rear differential, active stability control and sport ABS brakes. Integration of the stability control into the all-wheel system is new for all markets. Safety features include seat side and curtain airbags, driver's knee airbag, electronic brake force distribution and a tire pressure monitoring system.
