XRS and all-wheel models return to the line-up
Montreal, Quebec - Debuting alongside its all-new Corolla cousin, the 2009 Toyota Matrix is the hatchback model's second generation. Although the Corolla is a global product, the Matrix is sold only in North America, and is built exclusively in Toyota's plant in Ontario. Also unveiled in Montreal was the Matrix's sister car, the all-new Pontiac Vibe.
Along with a 1.8-litre base model, the 2009 Matrix marks the return of the sporty XRS model and the all-wheel drive option that were temporarily discontinued, with 2.4-litre engine. A new undercarriage includes the Corolla's torsion-beam rear suspension on most models, but the XRS and AWD use a double-wishbone setup, which makes the XRS even more fun to drive, especially with a five-speed manual transmission.
New standard features include six airbags, four-wheel disc brakes with ABS, brake assist and electronic brake force distribution, active front head restraints, tilt and telescopic wheel, and an improved cargo area with anti-slip strips to keep items from sliding around.
