VW returns with a clean diesel for 2009
Montreal, Quebec - Diesel fans will be glad to know that their favourite powerplant returns for 2009. Volkswagen has unveiled the 2009 Clean Diesel TDI, its latest and most technologically-advanced TDI diesel engine.
The Jetta TDI's turbocharged engine uses a common-rail injection system and develops 140 horsepower and 235 lb-ft of torque, but runs so quietly that it's easy to mistake it for a conventional gasoline engine. Thanks to new low-sulphur fuels, there's also virtually no diesel odour. Fuel efficiency figures are expected to be similar to the previous TDI engine, which delivered 5.1 L/100 km in highway use.
The new engine uses a state-of-the-art emission control system comprised of a diesel particulate filter trap, exhaust regenerative and a NOx storage catalyst, all of which allow it to meet stringent emissions standards without the need to add urea. The Jetta TDI will be offered with a standard six-speed manual transmission or with optional six-speed, dual-clutch automated Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG).
It will arrive in showrooms in August 2008, with a starting price of $25,575, a reduction of $1,275 over the previous-generation diesel Jetta.
