LA Auto Show:
GM introduces earthtroop.com to educate children about the environment

General Motors unveiled Earthtroop.com, a web site aimed at educating young people about protecting and improving the environment. The site is designed for children aged 7-17 and promotes awareness, responsibility and respect for the earth. GM says Earthtroop.com is the auto industry's most wide-ranging environmental education site.

"The club originated from GM's desire to educate people about maintaining and protecting our natural resources," said Dennis R. Minano, GM Vice President of Environmental and Energy and Chief Environmental Officer. "The club currently has some 900 members - a number we know will grow - and we hope Earthtroop.com will make it enjoyable for people everywhere to participate in environmental awareness and preservation."

The GM Environmental Science Club was launched at the 2000 North American International Auto Show last year. Joining Minano was Bill Nye "The Science Guy," who performed several science experiments that also can be found on the site.

"I applaud GM for creating the site and the Environmental Science Club," Nye said. "When you join the Club, you become an official Earthtrooper. We Earthtroopers are working to make our world a better place...keeping it clean and conserving our precious natural resources. I encourage every kid here to become an Earthtrooper."

Nye's involvement with GM began last year when he partnered with the automaker.
