February 17, 2001 General Motors Saturn division, which was originally developed to compete against Honda and Toyota in the U.S. market, has pulled out of the Japan market after three years. Saturn sold fewer than 5000 cars in Japan since 1997. GM will concentrate on selling Chevrolet models through its AutoWorld dealerships in Japan which also sell Isuzu and Suzuki models. GM has a part ownership of Isuzu and Suzuki.
February 16, 2001 More than 100 new Chrysler PT Cruisers paraded from the Metro Toronto Convention Centre to the Don Valley Parkway as part of the public opening of the Canadian International AutoShow on Friday morning. The Automobile Journalists Association of Canada named the 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser its Canadian Car of the Year at the AutoShow Preview on Wednesday. After the parade, the PT Cruisers were delivered to Chrysler dealers all over Ontario.

BMW unveiled a new high-performance edition of its X5 Sports Activity Vehicle recently at the Detroit auto show. The X5 HP has a 347 horsepower 4.6 litre V8 engine that's based on the 282 horsepower 4.4 litre V8 found in the X5 4.4i. The new engine will propel the all-wheel-drive X5 from rest to 100 km/h in approximately 6.5 seconds.
February 14, 2001 Nissan is recalling Quest minivans manufactured from April 13, 1992 to August 2, 1998 to replace a fuel tank vent hose that could develop cracks over time and cause a leak. No fires or injuries have been reported. The recall involves approximately 268,000 vehicles in North America. Nissan dealers will repair the hose at no cost to vehicle owners.
February 14, 2001 Mazda has developed a new fuel cell electric prototype vehicle based on the subcompact Mazda Premacy hatchback. The Premacy FC-EV will begin test runs on public roads for the first time in Japan on February 15.
February 14, 2001 Honda Motor Company displayed a new FCX-V3 fuel cell vehicle equipped with a new Honda-designed fuel cell stack yesterday. Earlier Honda FCX cars were powered by fuel cell stacks developed by Ballard Power Systems of Vancouver, including the FCX-V1 introduced in 1999 and a previous version of the FCX-V3 model.

February 8, 2001 The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) latest crash test results reveal the 2001 Chrysler Sebring four-door, Dodge Stratus four-door, Ford Crown Victoria four-door, Lincoln LS four-door, and the Mercury Grand Marquis four-door all received a five star rating for both the driver and passenger in a 35 mph frontal crash.
February 8, 2001 The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has updated its report of traffic fatalities related to Firestone ATX, Wilderness, and other tire models under investigation. As of February 2, 2001, 174 fatalities have been reported being related to these tires, an increase of 26 from the 148 that had been reported to the agency as of early December 2000.

It was just two weeks ago that Toyota announced an expansion of its West Virginia engine plant to build V6 engines for Lexus SUV's and four cylinder engines for the upcoming Toyota Matrix and Pontiac Vibe.

February 1, 2001 BMW is recalling up to 22,000 X5 sport utility vehicles worldwide to inspect a bolt on the steering column. The company said some bolts may not have been fitted properly, and there is a small risk of a loss of steering. X5 owners can have their vehicles inspected for free at BMW dealerships. The X5 is built in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
