Saturn Playgrounds program returns for sixth year

Oshawa, Ontario - For the sixth straight year, Saturn Canada will provide funds to build new playgrounds for children in communities across Canada. In 2002,

Saturn dealers will build 37 new playgrounds - seven in Western Canada, 20 in Ontario, six in Quebec and four in Atlantic Canada. To date, Saturn dealers have built and refurbished 185 playgrounds.

Eric LeBlanc, Saturn Canada's advertising and promotions manager, said that "It is our continuing wish to provide support to communities which intend to revitalize current playgrounds or build new ones. Saturn Canada is committed to bringing safe and creative playgrounds to Canadian youngsters."

"Saturn Retailers are also reaching beyond their immediate community and extending their goodwill to areas requiring more and better-equipped playground facilities," LeBlanc said. "Play and outdoor physical activity is vitally important to children's growth and development and we believe it is imperative for children to have safe places to play."

According to Dr. Mark Tremblay, Dean of Kinesiology, University of Saskatchewan, activity-friendly physical environments are important to resolving an inactivity crisis that is facing many Canadian children. Fun, spontaneous, free, safe play, created in a playground environment, are key to getting and keeping children active, he said.
