Volkswagen produces 22-millionth Golf

Wolfsburg, Germany - The 22-millionth Volkswagen Golf came off the assembly line in Wolfsburg on December 19th. The jubilee vehicle, a Golf FSI in indigo blue pearl effect finish, is destined for a customer in Brandenburg.

Daily Golf production world-wide runs at more than 3,600 units. Volkswagen builds the model at its six plants of Wolfsburg, Mosel, Brussels, Bratislava, Uitenhage (South Africa) and Curitiba (Brazil). Almost 40,000 employees are involved in production of the Golf, which began production in 1974, but was known in North America as the Rabbit until 1985.

In the course of this year, Golf production overtook that of the legendary Beetle, setting a new record at Volkswagen.

In Western Europe the Golf is the undisputed Number One in its class. Volkswagen sold 472,400 units between January and September. Apart from Germany, the most important European markets for the Golf are Italy, France and Great Britain. Outside of Europe, the USA, Japan and South Africa are the leading regions for Golf sales.
