Lower seat anchorages for child seats now mandatory in Canada

Under new regulations, effective September 1, 2002, Transport Canada requires all new passenger vehicles made for the Canadian market to be equipped with a Lower Universal Anchorage System (LUAS). Child seat manufacturers are also required to adapt their new seats to the anchorage system so that the two hardware systems fasten together easily.

First 42 volt battery shipped to BMW

Lithium Technology Corporation, and its German lithium polymer battery company partner, GAIA, have shipped their first prototype 42-Volt automotive battery to BMW under the auspices of the European Union-sponsored "Astor" program (Assessments and testing of advanced storage systems for propulsion and other electrical systems in passenger cars). Inventor of three-point safety belt to be inducted into National Inventors Hall of Fame

Nils Bohlin, a retired engineer for Sweden's Volvo Car Corporation, will be inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame (NIHF) during a ceremony in Akron, Ohio on September 21st. His achievement is a safety feature found in every vehicle manufactured today, 43 years after its invention: the three-point safety belt.

GM and Suzuki to invest $500 million in CAMI plant to build 2005 Chevrolet Equinox

General Motors of Canada and Suzuki Motor Corporation announced that their CAMI joint venture plant in Ingersoll, Ontario will invest more than $500 million to bring a new compact sport utility vehicle to the plant. The Chevrolet Equinox will debut in 2004 as a 2005 model.

Ford's automatic crash notification notifies 911 operators in less than sixty seconds

Ford Motor Company reports that critical safety information from crashed vehicles can now be delivered automatically to 9-1-1 operators in less than sixty seconds from the moment of impact, equipping EMS personnel to provide a more informed and possibly quicker response. Today crashes are reported to authorities an average of 5.2 minutes after the impact. By reducing the time in which authorities are notified to one minute, approximately 3,000 additional lives per year can be saved, resulting in almost a 10% reduction in fatalities, says the company.

Canadian Mitsubishi dealerships officially open for business today, but the first Mitsubishi vehicle was sold last week at a dealership in Ontario. A blue Montero Sport LS was sold by Wilson Mitsubishi in London, Ontario.

Three new inspection lanes at Ambassador Bridge expected to speed up cross border commercial traffic

The Ambassador Bridge announced the availability of three additional Customs primary inspection lanes for commercial traffic. These lanes have been outfitted with temporary inspection booths constructed by the Ambassador Bridge and are able to accommodate U.S. Customs officers.

Microsoft Corporation announced that Microsoft Windows CE for Automotive, a software platform designed to deliver in-car communication and information systems, is at the heart of the new in-car telematics devices used by "G-BOOK," Toyota Motor Corp.'s new information network service. Toyota will begin installing the in-car "G-BOOK" device in a new car in Japan this fall.
