BMW shows xActivity concept and 2004 3 Series Coupe and Convertible

Detroit, Michigan - The xActivity Concept Sports Activity Vehicle made its world debut on Monday. Also making their world debuts were the 2004 3 Series Coupe and Convertible which feature updated styling and technological enhancements, the V12-powered 760Li sedan, Z4 roadster, and the limited production Z8 Alpina Roadster V8.

Describing the xActivity as "an ideal companion for active people who participate in outdoor activities and need to transport their sports equipment with them," BMW says this 'Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV)' is an example of how sporty driving dynamics, versatility and the pleasure of open-air driving can be combined into one.

The most striking element of its styling is the roofline, a so-called "frame-structure convertible". Longitudinal members on both sides run from the A-pillar all the way to the back. This provides an open environment for driver and passengers with no B- or C-pillars.

The interior features state-of-the-art technologies such as pressure-sensitive "smart materials" which allow the seats themselves to become control elements for seat adjustment. As soon as the tailgate is opened, cargo, such as mountain bikes, is partially ejected for easy unloading.

The xActivity is powered by BMW's widely acclaimed 3.0-liter in-line 6-cylinder engine delivering 225 horsepower. Power is transmitted through a new standard six-speed manual gearbox to generously sized wheels with 245/45 tires at the front, 275/40 tires at the rear on 18-inch wheels.

The 2004 3 Series Coupe and Convertible have a wider kidney grille, modified powerdome on the hood, a closed and more compact front apron, and new headlight units with the directional indicators which reach up higher at the sides. The headlights not only have a new look but feature optional adaptive controls. This feature, offered in combination with Bi-Xenon headlights, allows the headlights to actually follow the road.

This Fall, both the 325Ci and 330Ci Coupes and Convertibles will be available with an optional six-speed Sequential Manual Gearbox. The 2004 3 Series Coupe and Convertible begin production in March and will arrive at BMW dealers in April.
