GM signs US$88 million agreement for fuel cell development

Washington, D.C. – General Motors Corporation and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) have signed a five-year, US$88 million agreement to build a 40-vehicle fuel cell fleet and further develop the technology.

Under the program, GM and the DOE will each contribute US$44 million to deploy fuel cell vehicle demonstration fleets in Washington, D.C., New York, California and Michigan. The agreement expires in September 2009.

In a separate commercial agreement, Shell Hydrogen LLC will support GM by setting up five hydrogen refuelling stations in Washington, D.C., metropolitan New York City, California, and a corridor between Washington and New York.

GM will also partner with the U.S. Army in Virginia and Quantum Technologies in California to create facilities for storage and maintenance of vehicles; NextEnergy in Detroit for codes and standards development; and Viewpoint Systems in Rochester, New York for remotely collecting and retrieving data.
